We are driving from Vienna to Salzburg and were wondering if there are any interesting sights that we should stop at along the way? Maybe something in Linz, Melk or Amstetten? I don%26#39;t see much on this site and my guide book isn%26#39;t very helpful. Thanks for your suggestions!

The abbey at Melk is something you will never forget. Allow a half day, and take the tour, well worth the extra 2 Euro.

Melk is directly on the route and has a great and very famous abbey absolutely worth visiting. Also, Melk is the beginning of the Danube valley %26quot;Wachau%26quot; famous for the white wine, castles and villages in beautiful landscape, especially in spring. You could leave Vienna in the morning not on the highway leading to Salzburg, but in north-westerly direction (highway A22, then S5) to the city of Krems, which is the other end of the %26quot;Wachau%26quot; and then head along the Danube, enjoying the wonderful views and definitely stopping in the village of Dürnstein, walk around a bit, maybe even up to the ruins of the castle with a fantastic view over the Danube. Around there several excellent restaurants (some run by famous winegrowers), for example Loibnerhof (village of Loiben), Jamek (Joching), or Florianihof (Weissenkirchen). After a bit more driving along the Danube and crossing a bridge, you%26#39;ll be at the famous Melk abbey and after visiting, you can quickly join the highway leading directly to Salzburg (less than two hours from there).
Another option would be the lake district east of Salzburg. Look on a map and you%26#39;ll see that just a few highway exits before Salzburg, there are many lakes south of the highway. I recommend exiting at Attersee, then to the south along the lake, further south and via St. Gilgen onto street 158. The village of St. Wolfgang is particularly beautiful, and you can even take a cog railroad up to the summit of Schafberg mountain (1800m). Street no 158 westbound will then lead you directly into Salzburg.
Both detours are very popular and the famous villages are well marked, so it%26#39;s hard to get lost. Do habve a look at a map, maybe online, to get an impression of the situation. Each of the detours can be comfortable done in a day including the remaining trip to Salzburg, but both would be a bit too much I guess, unless you do the Wachau first and then really just drive through the lake district into Salzburg for the scenery.

I do not recommend Amstetten or Linz, even though the latter now is %26quot;European Cultural Capital%26quot; of the year. This is an EU program to promote cultural tourism to cities which have not been perceived as particularly interesting before. Mainly, they are financing exhibitions, theater, concerts and happenings, so nothing too attractive for someone just passing through.

I do not agree with nemorino about the attractiveness of Linz. Most people exclusively associate Linz with large plants and steel industry, although there are many cultural sites as seen in many cities. I thought the same way many years ago. One year ago I took some pictures of Linz on a very sunny day:

Amstetten is not worth to be visited. But Steyr could be an option as it is very worthwhile and only a few miles off the track.

Lovely photos Mikey - makes me want to visit a city that sadly I%26#39;ve only ever passed through on a train, passed by in a car or flown over in a plane!

Thank you all for these wonderful suggestions. The pictures of Linz are beautiful! I wish I had more time in between now!
