Best day hike

We will be in Zell am See for a week in July and are looking for advice on day hikes. I would be interested to know what other members consider the very best hike, 5 to 6 hours long. If we were to do only one, which one should it be? I know I can get lists of hikes from the net but prefer personal views.

Thanks.

Me again!

A couple of walks we did when we were in Zell am See, although not 5-6 hours were:

Round the lake - totally flat, good shoes rather than boots. I%26#39;d probably walk from the town with the lake on my right. You follow a walking and cycle path past a campsite, then continue along the road on a pavement. There%26#39;s a lovely cafe overlooking the lake as you turn onto the opposite bank - lovely for lunch. There are various other bars along that side of the lake, and you can get a steamer back if it starts to rain. You then continue through a marshy area, along good paths, and eventually back to Zell. About 5km I think, 3-4 hours with lunch.

Go up the mountain on the small cable car. There%26#39;s a tiny hutte at the top and nothing else - it was open in July. Then walk down through the woods to eventually get back to the lakeside at Schuttdorf. The alpenhuttes on the route were closed in summer when we were there - the first placve for refreshment was in Schuttedorf. Then back along the lakeside to Zell. Possibly 4-5 km, 3 hours.

Up the Schmittenhohe on the big cable car to the summit. Large cafe at the top, great little hutte for lunch about 200m from the main cafe. Look in the petite and bijou Sissi Chapel, them walk down the mountain toward Zell. This is a really easy downhill walk with fantastic scenery and reasonable paths. Last part of the decsent can be on a cable car and chair lift. Probably 2 hours max, but lovely.

A lovely stroll across meadows - walk along the lakeside (lake on your right) and follow the path before the campsite to Prielau. There%26#39;s a fabulous schloss there which is wonderful for refreshments. You can follow the footpath round to get back to the lakeside road. Walking time approx 1 hour.

You lucky thing - Austria twice in one year! Where are you staying in Zell and St Wolfgang?

Thanks nildesperanda. We are going to Austria for 3 weeks in total, one each in St wolfgang, Zell am See and then Seefeld. We are staying in self catering apartments in St W and Seefeld and in hubertus B and b in Zell. We prefer to be as independent as possible and don%26#39;t like the idea of hotels for 3 weeks [Much too expensive too!}

Thanks for the suggestions. They are now in my holiday file.
