You can take the train to Fussen, Germany. As soon as you step out to the station there are buses that bring you through the small town and up the mountain. My wife and I stayed in Fussen for 4 nights, and would see the first trains rolling in at 8/9am (depending on the day) with the masses going to the castle. All you need to do is follow the crowd. the place is great, have fun. Oh, if you do not have good legs you might want to take another bus up from the first castle up to the next instead of walking up the hill. We walked and it took less time then waiting in line for the bus up to the second castle but it can be tough on the legs for one not use to it. check the Eurail website, it will give you time and cost for travel between cities. have fun and good travels, We%26#39;ve been to your cities of travel a number of times so write back if you have any other questions

The above post is rather simplistic and does not really provide good info regrading trains.
The train transfer from Innsbruck to Fussen requires much more than 3 hours travel time and at least 2 changes of train. Perhaps they saw trains arriving - but from where? and with what connections,
best advice - check as shown in Innsbruck for specific tours

If you don%26#39;t find a tour that suits you, you can still opt for a rental car. Public transportation between Innsbruck and Neuschwanstein very inefficient and therefore almost not feasible.

I think it will be to hard to travel by train and most of the other posts on forum suggest I should be able to find a local tour bus operator, thanks for all the info, i will check it out when I get there,

It would be possible to travel by regional VVT trains/bus from Innsbruck to Füssen. Travel time would be 3h 15 m with train changes in Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Ehrwald, and Reutte. Service from Reutte to Füssen and Füssen to Hohenschwangau is by bus.

It would be easiest to rent a car.

what is it about this castle that makes people want to visit it when public transport is so difficult? If I don%26#39;t see it on my June 09 holiday in Tirol am I missing something? We have loads of castles near here on N Wales coast.

As a visitor not a local I think the main problem comes when people who are in Innsbruck- in Austria, want to visit a place in Germany. Each operate their public transport seperately, especially to smaller towns. There is the small issue of mountains to get around too when you travel from Innsbruck.
From memory- 20 years ago it was easy to get to using public transport- trains mainly from- Munich it just took a little time.
Even though it is a main tourist attraction it is not in a city- hence the need to travel.
Are you missing something- That is a matter of personal opinion. I don%26#39;t think you can compare it to the castles in North Wales- different type of castle, different setting. It captures the imagination of people, it is very picturesque and of course Walt Disney used it to model his castle on.
It was something I really wanted to visit 20 odd years ago, I made the effort and I loved it- especially as I took the time to walk into the mountains above it to get a better view of it and the alps.

The train would (as above) take from 4 - 6 hours with a couple of changes, and would cost 57 Euros.
It is like Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic - people still make it there even though it is an almighty hassle getting tickets/3+ hours bus ride just for a day trip.
I%26#39;m with you on the North Wales castles, WirralScouse - I was distinctly underwhelmed by Neuschwannstein, and the Welsh ones are a bit more substantial. Millions would disagree, though :)
