Hi
Off to Niederau at the end of January and trying to budget for lunches etc. Hoping someone can advise what the mountain restaurants are like and give us a rough idea of the prices?

More expensive than the ones down in the valley...
Many of them offer self-service and decent local cuisine in a rustic environment. An outdoor area (patio etc.) is often enclosed where you can have a seat if it is sunny.

We went (only once) to the one 100 metres away from the top of the main chairlift in Niederau village. It was OK but only OK and was a bit canteen-ish.I had grostl and it was poor really. Can%26#39;t remember what the prices were like but as has already been said it is always dearer to eat and drink on the mountain than at resort level.By contrast we have been on many occasions to SkiWelt area near Ellmau/Going and in my opinion the mountain restaurants were better there.
If you limit yourself to goulash soup (which you can get everywhere) and a coffee I suppose less than E20 each should cover it.I hope you enjoy Niederau but be sure to try out nearby Auffach on the skibus or occasional public bus early in your week as many people prefer it to Niederau. You might too.

Thanks for the info, if soup is 20Euro for 2 people, I think I%26#39;ll think my rucksack for sandwiches!

€ 20 for a goulash - that`s nonsense!
Proper dishes at mountain huts in Niederau and also the rest of the Alps of Kitzbühel cost 10 - 12 Euros, smaller dishes (like spaghetti) 6-9 Euros, Soups around 4 Euros. Softdrinks (small) cost about 2,50, half a liter of beer Eur 3,00 - 3,50. Gluhwein and Jagertee is more expensive (4,00 - 5,50).
The best hut on the mountain is probably the Rübezahlhütte (www.ruebezahl-huette.at). It won a price for the best hut in the ski area in 2007. Cool thing: It has hot pot (outside whirl pool) with a nice view.

Good info there guys, thank you!! I will be in Niederau at the same time so cheers!

I said %26quot;goulasch soup and a coffee for less than E20%26quot;.I didn%26#39;t say goulasch soup for E20.Why would I go back to Niederau? I wouldn%26#39;t.Prefer Skiwelt area and shorter transfers.Just don%26#39;t stay at Hotel Vicky unless you are easily pleased.Having said that my brother and nephews loved it.It%26#39;s all down to expectations, personal standards and experiences.

Hi, we have just returned and found the lunches not too expensive depending on what you were requiring. A bowl of soup or french fries and a cold drink was usually enough for us, as usually had a big breakfast and evening meal. We were about 5 euro each. Did see people eating there own sandwiches and snacks as well though... Main courses cost between 5-10 euro. Have fun, we loved it- had great snow and sun!

Thanks Mother Hudla, that sounds a lot more bearable. Any idea how much the drinks tend to be in the village? White wine, beer or vodka?
2 weeks to go, getting excited.

As I live in Kitzbühel I don´t know the exact prices in Niederau. As always, prices can differ a lot, depending on the setting. In a normal bar or %26quot;Gasthaus%26quot; half a liter of beer is about € 3,20, a small glas of wine will cost about € 2,50 - 3,00. In bars, espaecially the %26quot;in-bars%26quot; prices may be a lot higher.
But don´t worry too much about the prices of drinks, the are always fair - just enoy the days and nights - YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY!

Just to give some feedback. We found that there wasn%26#39;t much if any difference in cost between cafes at the top and in the village. Things like hot dogs were 4e and pizzas a massive 9e.
Favorite place to eat was the restaurant at the top of the chair lift for run 8 at Auffach. Interesting menu with lots of local specialities and big portions!
Drinks were normally 4e for a glass of white wine and 3.50 for a beer.
Have fun
