We are looking for somewhere very scenic and traditional with lots of walks within easy access. We would prefer to have a good variety of nice places to eat within walking distance too.
Any suggestions? Thought Mayrhofen was one option?

3 locations in Tirol:
Ellmau, a 20 min. bus ride from St. Johann/Tirol. A small town, not overrun with tourists. The Harte Kaiser mountain has a funicular that takes you to a plataeu that offers many hiking opportunities, as does the Wilde Kaiser massif across the valley.
The KLemtal (Saalbach - Hinterglem). Several villages connected by hiking paths, opportunities to hike mountains (with initial ascent by ski lift), busses connect the villages.
The Kleine Walsertal, an Austrian enclave accessible through Oberstdorf/Allgaeu region. Good train connections between Obertdorf and Munich, short and frequent bus connections from O. station to the villages in the Walsertal -- Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg, Baad. Lots of walking and hiking opportunities. Many good places to eat.

PS: Should read 2 villages in Tirol. Walsertal obviously is not in Tirol.
