Car Hire in Salzburg

Hi everyone,

We will be in Salzburg for a few days mid-year and I was thinking of hiring a car for a couple of days so that we can get out into the countryside and have a good look around.

Generally speaking, I have been told that it is always cheaper to arrange car hire before leaving home (in our case Australia) but the quotes I have received are extremely expensive for such a short period of time (about the same as a week in say the UK).

Does anyone have any idea what the average cost would be to hire a car once we get to Salzburg - would just need a compact size (big enough for 3 people) but must be automatic (this seems to be where the expense comes in, but I haven%26#39;t driven a manual for about 10 years and don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d feel confident trying to drive one in Europe).

Appreciate any assistance.

At least you have already driven a car with manual gearshift. What price quotes did you receive?

Perhaps you find something cheaper here (although the selection is very limited):

Thanks for your reply Mikey.

The cheapest price I%26#39;ve been quoted (although this is for an automatic) is $AU300 (about 150 euro) for 2 days.

You could check the consolidator if you have not already done so-

Auto Europe- many posters here and elsewhere find them to have the best prices.

They act as an agent for major firms and you often can get better prices than dealing direct .

Also look at the firm Sixt - they area large and good firm in Europe often with good prices-

Be certain you compare like offers as many do not offer unlimited mileage or insurance greatly adding to the cost when this is factored in.

Also check sizes of autos- lauda , cheap price, but I believe only offers the regular Smart car - too small for 3 adults and comfort - also limited free mileage.

The major difference in price as you already have seen is the manual versus automatic.

The manual of course much cheaper, often 50 % less.

Perhaps you wish to practice a little before your journey and see if this would work for you.

Recently a friend got an auto 3 days through autoeurope for less than 120 US dollars with unlimited mileage tax and insurance included.

The time of year makes a difference too- supply and demand still works, but the tourism business seems headed for a slow year , perhaps looking as you do now, you can find a bargain.

Thanks Vertical. I will check out these websites ... and perhaps find a manual car I can drive around for a few days!
