Has anyone ever done the Melk/Danube Cruise/Krems enroute to Vienna from Salzburg? How was the trip?
My husband and I will be in Austria for 4 nights in May 2009 (2 nights Salzburg and 2 nights Vienna), and we%26#39;re trying to decide whether we should 1) do the Melk abbey-cruise-Krems excursion enroute from Salzburg to Vienna, or 2) go straight to Vienna and just do the combo-train-cruise from there.

In my opinion , it is easier to go directly from Salzburg to Vienna- then make the Melk and boat trip as a day visit.
The melk train station does have lockers for luggage.
But the trip from Salzburg to Melk involves a change of train and takes extra time.
Then you must walk back from the Abbey to the train station - perhaps 15 minutes- get luggage and then the walk to the boat- 15 minutes + .
The boat would accept small amounts of luggage - but you end the boat trip in Krems about 3 kilometers from the train station- a taxi or bus tansfer- easy without luggage- then the trip from train station to hotel in Vienna.
No fun hauling luggage this far and on/ off transport.
The Melk Abbey Danube trip is memorable- much to see - beautiful landscape- chance to enjoy a great day- your luggage just interferes with this good experience.
The boat trip is best experienced from the top open deck in good weather. Again no fun hauling luggage up and down to enjoy the views.

Thanks so much, Vertical. Looks like we will just do the Danube cruise from Vienna. You%26#39;re right, no fun sightseeing with luggage. I%26#39;m hoping mid May is good enough weather for upper deck viewing on the cruise. We are travelling a long way just to celebrate our wedding anniversary in Austria, and we want everything to be relaxing, convenient and enjoyable. :-)
