Salzburg day trip

Hi,

We will be making a day trip to Salzburg from Munich on 3rd May (sunday). We will be buying the salzburg card %26amp; plan to visit the following places-

1.Hohensalzburg Fortress

2.Mirabell Garden %26amp; Castle

3.Hellbrunn Palace (Schloss Hellbrunn)

4.Domkirche Cathedral (Free)

5.Getreidegasse

Can someone suggest an itinerary based on this?

Thanks

Hello, Sheetal,

May is a lovely time to visit Salzburg. I hope you have a great time.

All the sights are very close together because Salzburg is a small city. I guess you are arriving by train. The closest sight to the train station is Mirabelgarten so if I were you I would visit that either first or last.

If you visit Mirabelgarten first you could either walk from the station or take one of the many buses that go past Mirabel. This would only take a few minutes.

After viewing the palace and gardens you should head out of the entrance into Makartplatz. Turn right in Makartplatz, towards the river and cross by the footbridge (Makartsteg) into the old town. Once across the river you can take any of the small alley ways into Getreidegasse. Again this will only take a few moments and if you%26#39;re unsure of directions you can ask anyone and they will help you.

In Getreidegasse you have some lovely shops and also Mozart%26#39;s birthplace. From Getreidegasse you need to head for Altermarkt. Getreidegasse leads down to Altermarkt and is easy to find. Turn right and cross the square and you come to Residenzplatz. Here, to the right, you will see the cathedral(Dom).

After the Dom you go through the arches into Kapitelplatz. Go straight up towards the Fortress and you will find the funicular station where the little train will take you to the top. From Kapitelplatz you could also go into St Peter%26#39;s cemetery if you have time.

Give yourself quite a long time to see the fortress. There is a nice cafe on the south battlements where you could have lunch.

To go to Hellbrunn you need to catch bus No. 25. As you are there for just one day I would recommend you take a taxi to save time. The Italian garden at Hellbrunn is lovely, with trick fountains. The tour of the palace is quite short so should not take up too much time.

If there is still some time before your train you could go back to the centre of the old town and take in the atmosphere, have a coffee and watch the world go by. Alternatively you could go back across the footbridge to Makartplatz where Mozart%26#39;s other house is situated. It would then be a short bus ride back to the train station.

If you decided to visit Mirabelgarten at the end of the day I recommend you take a bus from the train station and ask for Zentrum or Hanuschplatz. This will drop you close to the alley ways that lead to Getreidegasse and you could start your day there instead.

I hope that doesn%26#39;t sound too confusing :-)

Thanks so much :) It was exactly what I was looking for, not confusing at all!

Thanks for spending time %26amp; effort to answer what my husband thought was a stupid question.

While you are at Marketplatz, try the cheese that they sell off the carts.

|||

Sorry, that is supposed to read Altermarkt.

And also try the Apple Strudel at Mozart Cafe near Mozart%26#39;s birthhouse also known as %26#39;Mozarts Geburtshaus%26#39;

Hello, the main market is now in Universitatsplatz at the back of Mozart%26#39;s birthplace. Yes, the cheeses are wonderful :-) You can buy the Mozart chocolates from here too. In this same square is the university church which is huge but not as beautiful as the Dom.

Sheetal, I%26#39;m so glad my itinerary was useful. Please feel free to ask further questions.
