I posted something similar in the Slovenia forum as well for books there, but I wanted to post here in case anyone had good Austria recommendations.
I%26#39;m interested in any good Novels/Fiction books and or movies that take place in and around Salzburg/Eaglnes Nest/ Berchtesgaden. I think it is fun to read a good book that takes place in the area. Sometimes even gives you some good tips and a feel for the area that guidebooks/research doesn%26#39;t. We are going to Italy too and I have a lot of good ones for there from the forums, but don%26#39;t see anything here. Also we are going to bled/ljubljana/bohinj as well so if you know of anything for there as well that would be good.

This is a very interesting question I have never had to answer yet. It really amazes me to read about how intensively some people prepare for a foreign trip - and I admit I like it! Unfortunately, I cannot provide you appropriate information on this but I will ask friends and family.

Well the obvious movie to watch is The Sound of Music which was filmed in Salzburg. I can%26#39;t think of any other international films. Some years ago there was a novel called The Salzburg Connection, a spy novel by Helen MacInnes. I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s still in print. I%26#39;m actually writing a novel set in Salzburg myself but sadly I won%26#39;t have it finished just yet :-) There are some good guidebooks but Salzburg is a very small city and the tourist information office (in Mozartplatz) should be able to help you.

Perhaps the book by Alistair Maclean later made into a movie %26quot; Where Eagles Dare %26quot;
Major setting and central to the movie is a famous castle just south of Salzburg- numerous scenes shot in that area.
Some enjoy the book more than the movie others like the movie starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton among others.

Go on this Amazon page and click to page 22-24. Lonely Planet recomments some literature - however for all of Austria.
