My husband and I will be in Salzburg on our 11th wedding anniversary. It will be our first time there. Is there any place in particular that stands out that we should visit to make the celebration really special? It can be a place to eat or just a place to visit. I thought about going to see the lakes but don%26#39;t know which one is the best and most accessible. We%26#39;ll probably just be taking the train or bus as we don%26#39;t want to get lost driving! :-) Would appreciate any suggestions.

Hello, how lovely to spend your anniversary in Salzburg. What time of year will you be there? In the city itself the fortress is a must-see. The old city is very small so you can easily get around on foot and see all the usual tourist sights like the cathedral, St Peter%26#39;s cemetery, the Mozart houses and Mirabelgarten. Just a short bus ride from the centre is Schloss Hellbrunn. This has a lovely Italian garden with trick fountains.
Getting around by car in Austria is very easy and you%26#39;re unlikely to become lost. But if you wanted to see some of the lake district you could take the bus from Salzburg to St Gilgen which lies on the shore of Wofgangsee lake. There are also organised tours to these lakes and to Hallstatt which is very romantic and spectacular (but you need a good clear day to see it at its best). Panoramatours have a lot of excursions so you could check with website:

The bus that takes you to Schloss Hellbrunn also goes to the Untersberg cable car. Here you can go up the mountain to see spectacular views of the city and the Alps. You need good shoes up there as the paths are rocky.
One thing I would recommend is that you don%26#39;t stay in the area around the train station. It%26#39;s not a good part of town and there are many hotels in much nicer locations. A hotel in the old town would be the most convenient for all the sights.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I forgot to mention that we will be in Salzburg from 17 to 19 May. I read about the Salzburg card and plan to get one. The cable car up to Unterberg is included in the Salzburg card benefits, but is the bus ride to get to the cable car starting point included also?

Hello,
Yes, the Salzburg card enables you to travel free on all the city buses. Just keep it with you at all times. The bus to Hellbrunn/Untersberg is the No. 25.
I also recommend a trip up on the Monchsberg lift in the city, to the museum of modern art. Even if you don%26#39;t want to see the museum the views from outside its doors are some of the best in Salzburg. There is also a very smart restaurant called M32 up there with the same wonderful views. The Monchsberg is a lovely hill to walk on and in May especially. It%26#39;s at this time of year that all the horse chestnut trees are in flower all over the city and the flowers in Mirabelgarten will be fabulous.
The Salzburg card includes the Monchsberg lift.

Thanks LizR! The Monschberg sounds lovely in spring! We are so excited about this trip. We had the whole of Europe to choose from, and I%26#39;m so glad I picked Austria.
