Is it worth the risk of landing up in vienna and THEN looking for car hire. or should one do the booking on internet.
Any idea which is likely to be cheaper.(but with no compromise on reliability or safety of course)
appreciate any advice, thanx in advance

see the other post running about auto rental in Salzburg.
Usually cheaper to pre book.
Many say best prices are with Auto Europe -
www.autoeurope.com
they will book you through a major auto rental firm at excelent price -you pick up your auto at the auto firm rental office - can be avis or another major firm.
all autos will be good condition and reliable - most rentals almost new.
you can probably find info on the firm placing their name in the search box

Note that you will most likely rent for at least 3 days to make the rental worthwhile. The one-day to two-day fees are typically very high. If you rent from airport or train station locations, there will be an additional facility fee charged.
Autoeurope is a great sight and I have used it a couple of times with no problem.

I just realised that one has to pass thru germany when travelling from Salzburg to saalfelden (at least on the via michelin maps).
When I hire the car - will i have to pay for 2 countries or will it be in the same hire contract as for austria?

You will be allowed to drive in Germany. You will usually incur a big drop off charge if you pick up the car in Austria and drop it in Germany or any other country other than Austria.
