When travelling from Vienna to Prague by train, which station is used? My guidebook says Franz-Josefs Banhof, but I have also read that one uses Sudbanhof. Or do trains depart from both stations to Prague?
Many thanks in advance.

When do you plan to travel?
Look for the train schedule at
www.oebb.at
If you travel today it is possible to get a train from Franz Josef Bahnhof but I doubt you would want this as several changes of train are needed and the time involved is not convenient and the trains are not particularly modern by most standards.. This connection will end very soon due to rail bridge construction.
Look to travel from the Sudbahnhof with frequent schedules, faster and no change of train.
Maybe you could find a bettr guidebook too.
Also look to the numerous postings here regarding trains to Prague just use the search box.

www.idos.cz is more user-friendly, I find.
As far as I know they all go from Suedbahnhof, unless, as Beppo says, you want to change on several occasions and take all day getting there. I agree that your guidbook may need to pay a prolonged visit to the trash can :) (or at least that particular section)

Many years ago, trains between Vienna and Prague used to take the Emperor Franz Joseph Railroad (Vienna FJB-Gmünd-Ceske Velenice-Tabor-Prague) that is actually shorter than the railroad they run on today (Vienna South-Breclav-Brno-Prague). Your guidebook seems to be pretty old or badly investigated, although it is basically possible to reach Prague involving one (coordinated) transfer in Ceske Budejovice. Direct trains leave from Railway Station South/East Wing and run much faster.

Thanks everyone! The guidebook I%26#39;m using is the DK Eyewitness Top 10 Vienna - printed in 2007! I%26#39;ll have to send them an email informing them that there is an error in the information. Thanks again for all the information you have provided.

Here is a very old post that is about a Czech review of guidebooks tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g274684-i94-k22670…
A lot of the information is recycled year after year, but information such as this should really have been updated :)
