I%26#39;m going to Vienna in the first week of april. We would like to tour the Wachau.
I have looked at the boat and train proposals in the vienna forum.
It seems that train plus boat trip would be pretty expensive.
How much would it cost to rent a car for a day, do you think? Any adress? We will live in Josefstadt.
Personally I would prefer the bike but the two lazy children wouldn%26#39;t.

Train ticket for the entire family including Vienna%26gt;Melk and Krems%26gt;Vienna for only 28€. Valid on all regional trains in Austria. Search for %26quot;Einfach-Raus-Ticket%26quot; (means Get-out-of-city-ticket) in the forum. You see that it is not that expensive. Moreover, a trip on a vessel is much more exciting than sitting in a car. Even if somebody decides to drive there, I would suggest to take the ship. The views are way more memorable.
A lot of visitors do this trip, but additionally tour the gorgeous abbey in Melk, where the upstream dock of the danube vessel is located.

You do not mention the age of your children and to me this can be important for this day trip.
Remember 1 1/2 hour trip by train Vienna - Melk - about a 2 hour boat ride can be boring to some kids - only you know their likes and dislikes .
The boats do not begin river journeys until April 5 and service is limited.
A car can offer you much flexibility to see most all things at your own pace with time to eat where you wish - give young kids some play time.
Some auto rentals
Sixt
in Kragran ( not far from Leopoldstadt)
Wagramerstrasse 117
or Sudbahnhof
example of rate daily - often cheaper weekend rates
77 euro for a mazda or VW Polo - unlimited mileage you just pay gas price. Roads are excelent - limited access autobahn most of the way to Krems.
The Wagramerstrasse office offers very easy access to the A-22 towerd the wachau.
Even a McDonalds near this road close to Korneuberg exit.
The auto allows easy access to the nice towns of Spitz ( with ship museum )
Weissenkirchen ( with nice museum )
Mautern ( with roman museum ) and of course the luxury of staying at each place as long or as short as you wish.
Also if you wish a chance to drive through the vineyards and apricot orchards hopefully in bloom in early April.
Whichever you choose - a nice day trip.
The driving time Vienna to Krems less than 1 hour - Krems Melk is 35 klometers 20 minutes by car.

If you want to rent a car, I recommend using an online price-comparison site such as www.expedia.com or www.kayak.com and book online in advance. You can get a compact car from a reputable agency downtown from around 50,- Euro per day.

Thank you! I know it is a while ago but I had not checked the answers out. Both kids loves trains so we will do this!
