My wife and i are going to be visiting Salzburg in the beginging of July, we want to take a side trip to the Eagles nest. Is it worth it to spend the extra $$ and go on a guided trip from Panorama, or should i take the bus and make my own way?

The Tour Coaches take you to the car Park at the base of the Kielsteinhaus and then you travel by mini coach up the mountain. I dare say you could do the trip on your own but not likely to save much and you would have to queue for tickets etc. The visit is very much worth it though for historical interest and views etc.

You could do it on your own and enjoy it. I would highly recommend the tour by David and Christine Harper which we took in 2004 and it was well worth the money. Here is a link to the site.
