I find the DDSG schedule very confusing---I would like to get to Melk, see the Abbey, then take a river boat that goes to (or past)Durnstein, and ends up in Vienna. Can this be done in one day (late April)?

Just look a couple of posts down the forum for your answer!

No scheduled service between Vienna and the Wachau Region(=between Krems and Melk). Ships run between Melk and Krems and call at a few places in between (like Dürnstein). Melk and Krems alike are easily reachable by train.

This trip is easily done in one day- many visitors do this.
General service begins in early April.
Note - 2 boat lines offer this service - their docks adjacent to each other - so no trouble finding then
the other firm Brandner.
The boat trip leaving Melk at 13:50 ( 1:50 PM is probably the most popular as it gives you a good amount of time to explore the Abbey , gardens and town- even get something to eat if you wish.
You can depart from the boat at Dürnstein at 15:10 - again giving you good time for sightseeing-
The schedule not really confusing - just lok carefully as some trips are for limited dates- many do this trip in April and may to view the orchards and wine gardens in bloom.
Train schedule can be found at
www.oebb.at
The schedule Krems- Vienna- (now about 1 each hour but some with one change) is likely to change as many residents have complained about the recent changes in service , politicians became involved and now a promise to enlarge schedule.
Contrarry to advice given above- scheduled boat service Vienna - Krems Dürnstein exists - the trip given on Sundays by DDSG.
I would not advise taking this as it is a long slow trip and the scenery not very interesting when compared to Melk - Krems.
