In Austria you can only rely on railway when it comes to domestic travel. Prices are regulated, but there are options to lower the price. You can either purchase a discount card or buy the EINFACH-RAUS-TICKET (for info please use search button). Latter ones is actually very inefficient if traveling longer distances as it extremely boosts the travel time, but if the price counts....

Between Vienna and Prague you can opt for the student ageny bus which is cheaper than the train.

I just did the OBB train from Vienna to Prague to Salzburg and it was $48 euro total. What a steal of a deal. How I did it was went into the OBB ticket office and had the ticket agent do a search for cheap tickets. This offer came up but it was no refunds, exchanges so I had to be sure the times/dates is what I wanted. It worked out great.

I suppose you (fortunately) got one of the 19€/29€ tickets whose availability highly fluctuates. While some routes sell out quicker meaning you won%26#39;t get a ticket short before departure, on other routes they are still available a few days before or even on the day of the desired departure.

I really don%26#39;t know exactly what I got, except for the good deal. But this deal was not online or anything so I am glad I went to see an OBB agent. But in any case, yes, I imagine like planes in the US, there are always a few seats for cheap available, depending on time, date and route and once they are gone, the price goes up. I wasn%26#39;t super flexible, but I just happened to want the time, date and route that was on sale. But I think my overall recommendation, if possible, is for travellers to try to go to the OBB agents, as all the online pricing, especially %26quot;deals%26quot; seemed a bit confusing. Or maybe I%26#39;m just not that bright. :)

In general, there are no %26quot;deals%26quot; for domestic travel. There%26#39;s no difference in fares, all tickets are flexible and not bound to a train or seat.

What the ticket agent probably sold you is a ticket Vienna-Germany and Germany-Vienna as there are Sparschiene offers for € 29 oneway. They are valid (and sell out quickly) for some trains that go outside of Austria.

Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a border station between Austria/Germany so you%26#39;d probably got these tickets for this reason.
