Advice on places to see and to clear confusion...

Hi, have been wanting to visit the long heard spectacular Austrian Alpine Countryside and am planning to visit this summer august but wondering are the places i have been reading in Alpine region and are they considered as countryside? 1st of all, where is salzkammergut(cant spell it gud), does it encompass salzburg and nearby areas? I am allocating 1week for this region and munich, initial plan wud be 2 days for munich and the rest for salzkammergut. Places i wud like to visit are certainly salzburg itself and hallstatt, others include St wolfgang, Gilgen, Zell Am See, Konigsee and Bechtereusen area? Would it be too much to see them all in 5days? Is their attractions overlapping and which 1 should i forsake? Lastly what about area like Gmunden and lakes like ebensee and altaussee? It seems that they are never mentioned b4 in this forum? Million Thanks for ur patience in answering.

The Salzkammergut is located East of the city of Salzburg and accommodates most of the places you have mentioned in this thread. To ease your geographical confusion it would be helpful if you would download applications like GOOGLE EARTH which is an unbelievably useful tool.

Five days are likely to be too less for the number of destinations mentioned. If you only drive through the villages without stopping, you could probably see most of the places stated, but such a rush is never recommendable. I would not miss St. Wolfgang, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and the ice caves in Obertraun. All other destinations are picturesque either, but you need to cut off some of them. In my opinion you should dismiss Zell am See, Konigsee and Berchtesgaden in order to focus on the Salzkammergut.

10x for advising which places to be forsaken. I wont be driving, all will be done by public transport. What about Gmunden and the 2 lakes(ebenssee and altaussee) i mentioned coz i saw from a travelbook, they are spectacular. And is the Hallstatt lake or the 2 lakes above allowed for swimming during summer? thanks

Although I live in Kitzbühel/ Tyrol, which is an other beautiful Austrian town in the Alps, I am atotal fan of the Salzkammergut. We go there for biking holidays once a year, usally at the end of May, beginning of June. You get a good overview over the area here: http://www.salzkammergut.at/en

Be aware, that due to the lakes and the small roads, the distances are larger than they appear.
