from melk to krems

i was wondering if this is a good plan for my visit to the danube valley...and i have two questions...

day 1- leave early from vienna by train to melk, stash my luggage in the luggage lockers, look around melk, leave melk in the early evening by train to st. polten, change trains in st. polten for krems and stay the night. (QUESTION #1-is going through st. polten by train the best way to get from melk to krems?)

day 2- rent a bike early in the morning, take a train (QUESTION #2-can you take a bike on this train?) to emmersdorf, take a leisurely bike ride back to krems.

thanks for your help!

I believe that you can make a better plan.

Day 1 - why leave the area of Melk and go to Krems- many places to stay in Melk or just across the river in Emmersdorf.

If you insist to go to Krems- the easiest way is the bus Melk to Spitz and this connecting to the regional train directly to Krems- much more direct- faster- more scenic than via St. Polten

or an alternative the boat trip melk - Krems - they permit luggage and also bikes.

Day #2 rent your - some hotels even have free use of bikes- ride downstream to Krems - take boat back or take the boat or regional train from Spitz ( 5- 7 kilometers from Melk to krems and ride back.

The entire distance Melk - Krems is only about 35 kilometers so this is not a full day ride unless you make frequent stops for sightseeing and wine drinking - both very possible.
