Best ski town to live for 2 months

Ok, my wife and I want to experience a slice of life in an Austrian ski town in winter 2010. We want to move with our 2 kids (they%26#39;ll be 2 and 4yrs) to a ski village somewhere in the Austrian alps for 2 months.

I%26#39;m looking for some suggestions from all the pros who know the best places.

We don%26#39;t have a car, and we%26#39;ll get there by train from Vienna. We%26#39;re looking in Tirol, but anywhere with amazing views and great skiing is good.

The Euro skiing I%26#39;ve done is Filzmoos, Bad Kleinkirchhem, Garmisch Saas Fe, and Zermatt before, but I%26#39;m dying to pick a nice Austrian town and live in it for a brief season.

We want to be able to be able to get to a lift with just a short walk from our apartment.

Not interested in the Apres Ski scene, as we%26#39;ve got kids.

So, if you could go and live anywhere in Austria to ski everyday for 2 months where would you go? And what time of the year? I was thinking starting in mid February and on.

Please help with some thoughts?

If you start your extended holiday in mid February, you will reach mid April what could be a problem as this month is not very safe regarding snow availability and quality. It is better to commence your activities in January.

It is hard to make any recommendation as there are so many ski resorts, but most would not entirely match your criteria (...rail access, apartment pretty close to ski lift etc.). You could focus on

%26gt; Arlberg Area (ÖBB: St. Anton am Arlberg)

%26gt; Ischgl or Galtür (ÖBB: Landeck-Zams)

%26gt; Sölden (ÖBB: Ötztal)

%26gt; Saalbach-Hinterglemm (ÖBB: Maishofen-Saalbach)

%26gt; Kaprun (ÖBB: Zell am See)

%26gt; Zell am See (ÖBB: Zell am See)

The side information displays the closest train station (ÖBB is the Austrian Railway Operator). Bear in mind that next railway station might be a few kilometers apart.

I definitely can suggest the Alps of Kitzbuhel. Ther is good public transport and with the Kitzbueheler Alpen AllStarCard (www.allstarcard.at) you can go skiing in 7 different ski areas, all close by, including famous ones as Kitzbuehel, Saalbach-Hinergelmm, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser or Kitzsteinhorn (Glacier ski area).

Nice apartments for 2 month at a reasonable price you should fin in St.Johann in Tirol. A small lively town with roughly 9.000 inhabitants, good shopping facilities (not only fashionable boutiques like in Kitzbühel) and also some activities for kids (indoor pool, tobogganing, …).

The local tourist board should be able to help you finding an apartment. www.kitzalps.cc

Thanks for the tips guys. What are your thoughts on the %26quot;family environment%26quot; of these suggestions? I know places like Filzmoos or BK are good for families, but we want to go somewhere higher up than those places.

I know Soelden and Kitzbuehl are great skiing, but are they too party oriented? Or do I have the wrong impression? I%26#39;d love to go to either one, I%26#39;d also love to get some sleep and not be on slopes crowded with ravers. Not that there%26#39;s anything wrong with that! Just not want I%26#39;m looking for in a nice quaint 2 month stay.

You do not mention price range for accomodations for this stay - This would assist in a search for a good place

In the Alps of Kitzbühel you´ll find both:

Good for Apré ski and party are Westendorf, Kirchberg and Kitzbühel.

More quiet but still lively are St.Johann, Brixen, Hopfgarten

Very small and peacefull are Kirchdorf, Oberndorf, Reith bei Kitzbühel, Aurach, Jochberg or Itter.

Price? Cheap but good? I%26#39;m not interested in high end fancy thrills for this trip. I%26#39;ve got a trip to Zermatt earlier in the year to do that. This is more of a %26quot;value, quaint atmosphere, but still awesome skiing experience with breathtaking views%26quot; that I%26#39;m looking for.

Thanks for all the replies too!

I think that Kaprun would definitely tick all of your boxes. I guess that your kids have done very little skiing, if any, and so the nursery slopes in the village would be ideal. There%26#39;s also a kreche to allow you to go and do your own thing. In the centre of the village there%26#39;s a super swimming pool and a decent Adeg supermarket. The bus system in the area is free and very efficient. It%26#39;s a quiet village, but has sufficient entertainment if you search it out.
