We are thinking of hiring a car in Salzburg and driving a roundabout route to Villach.
Could anyone advise me whether it is possible/better to take the car into Slovenia or whether there is public transport we can get from Villach to Bled.
Appreciate your help.

Between Villach and Bled (via Jessenice) you can rely on public transportation although a car would make it much easier. In case you will take a motorway just bear in mind that Slovenia has introduced stickers for their usage. For train times visit:

Do you return the car in Austria? Usually there are drop-off fees of hundreds of Euros if you return in another country.
The railway station of Bled is %26quot;Lesce Bled%26quot;, about 4 kilometres from the village. Bus and Taxi available.
Railway timetable to Lesce Bled:

Tickets from the ticket window. Tickets are flexible (not bound to a train) and can never sell out.

Yes, I did wonder if we could take a car over the border...sounds like the train would be the better option. If we gave up the car in Villach and then hired one in Slovenia...any suggestions where we could do that?
After Bled we have to get to Trieste, so having a car would be good. Alternatively, would train or bus be the best bet for that...although I have read that some people suggest a taxi.

Mikey, could you tell me what %26#39;stickers%26#39; are for the road usage?

A sticker is your permission to use any motorway and is adhered to the windshield of a car. I did some research and found out the following facts:
-%26gt; In order to get (conveniently and fast) to Slovenia from Austria (Carinthia Province) you need to drive through the Karawanken Tunnel whose usage is subject to an extra charge of 6.50€. This is because of the steep costs of tunneling.
-%26gt; The Slovenian motorway owner and operator only sells stickers with a validity of 6 and 12 months respectively. I remember that this policy (logically) caused a lot of anger and criticism. The price of 6-month sticker is 35€.
cestnina.si/Dokumenti/Toll/Methods_of_paymen…
-%26gt; No idea whether it is (easily) possible to leave the motorway right after the tunnel portal in order to use local roads which are not subject to permission.
-%26gt; Instead taking motorways you could also take local roads to Slovenia via Wurzenpass Road #109 (eventually closed in winter!), Kranjska Gora and again Jessenice. It would take longer but the landscape would be much more scenic and memorable.
-%26gt; The rental car issue needs to be solved on your own. From your information stated I derive that you won%26#39;t return to Austria. Whether it makes sense to drop-off your car in Slovenia must be assessed on your own. If you should contemplate returning to Austria, I would definitely opt for a rental car.

Thanks for all that Mikey - most useful.
