Vienna, Prague and ? (Train trip, May 2009)

I%26#39;m coming to Vienna for a 3 or 4 night meeting at the end of May and would like to make more of a trip of it by taking the train to perhap 2 other cities for a total trip time of 8 or 9 days. Prague looks like a good option, but where else would you suggest? We%26#39;d have to fly home(fairly cheaply) to London from whereever is suggested and are interested in some nice train views, historic buildings and good food!

Thanks for your comments.

You can contemplate Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Salzburg. These cities are full of historical sites, good restaurants and entertaining nightlife. As always, there is not one destination that matches all your needs. Train rides between Vienna and the places mentioned are okay but not stunning.

I loved Prague. You need about 3 days there. We are going to Budapest this year. Heard it was beautiful, but cannot comment on it yet.

Brno is another place worth visiting http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en - it is about the same distance timewise centre-to-centre as Bratislava (about 1hr 40 minutes by train) and there is more to see if you want historic buildings and are after good food at reasonable prices. I prefer it to Prague.

You need at least four days there to begin to scratch the surface, and the end of May is a perfect time to visit. From there you can make visits to several interesting places (do a search in the Czech Republic forum). There are cheap direct flights to Stansted (Ryanair) from there as well.

Check it out!

We%26#39;re doing a similar trip in April, and are hitting Vienna, Prague %26amp; Munich via train.

Thanks for your suggestions. We%26#39;ve decided on Vienna, Brno and Prague - the distances seem very comfortable for a 1 week trip and Brno is conveniently on the Vienna-Prague train route...I think!

I just returned from Vienna, Prague and Salzburg. I loved it. I thought the views from Prague to Salzburg were very nice as you headed into the Alps. I stayed 4 days in Vienna, 3 days in Prague, and 1.5 says in Salzburg. While the more you stay in any city, the better it is, I thought these time frames were perfect to get a snapshot of what the city has to offer.

Good choice rootjuice! If you need any other advice about what to do/eating, etc, take a look at my posts in the Czech Republic forum - I have covered it quite extensively.

Be sure not to miss Blahovka and Hotel Pegas - two of the best pubs in the country! I posted the link with the historical sites above - and don%26#39;t think that all the best restaurants are in the centre as they are not - they are in the residential areas (logically :)), which I have also covered.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other queries.

Enjoy!
