Hiking in Austria-Where to go??

Hello! I am planning my first trip to Europe and I need help with the Austria portion of my trip. I am going to be coming from Bavaria (Munich/Fussen) into Austria. I%26#39;d like to see one of the bigger cities and then go somewhere to hike in the mountains. I am trying to find a mountain town that is easily accessible from the bus or train, not extremely far from one of the major cities (probably Salzburg), and has several nice mountain trails. I am looking for either moderately difficult-strenuous all day long hikes or 1-2 day long hikes. I would like to hike for 3-4 days total. The areas I am thinking about are Schladming Dachstein area, Filzmoos, or Zell am See but i am very open to any suggestions. Filzmoos seems like it may be very nice, does anyone have any experience here? Also, I am unsure if I should rent a car or not. I would prefer to use public transportation, would this be a possibility? If anyone could recommend a good town or good hiking/backpacking trails that I may be interested in, I would really appreciate it! I could also really use some help with transportation recommendations. Thanks a lot!

The mountains around Kitzbuhl are very nice for hiking, not to high, not to step, but with fantastic views (for example at the %26quot;Wilde Kaiser%26quot; or the %26quot;Kitzbueheler Horn%26quot;). Hiking season starts at end of May (which is rather early for Tyrol).

If you get the Kitzbueheler Alpen Summer Card you can use alle 31 lifts in the area AND - for an additional 2 Euros per day - also the public bus system, which is quite good. Nevertheless public transport does not get you to hidden valleys, mountain lakes or old moutnain huts. IF you want this, you should definitly hire a car.

Places to stay:

If you want a typical Austrian/ Tyrolian mountain village you shpould stay in Westendorf. If you prefer a small Tyrolian town with good shooping facilitys and many restaurants to choose, St.Johann is your choice. The famous Kitzbühel is always worth a visit. All places are about 1 hour away from Salzburg and 1,5 hours away from Munich.
