Coins and Music

Hello,

Last year in July I went to the Schlosspark Theresianum on Favoritenstraße 15 for a fast-moving musical medley with lots of classics and the singers doing a little bit of acting and dancing in between the singing.

It was held outdoors, and I absolutely loved it. No serious slow music like Mozart, only really lively pieces. Anyway, the reason I mention it is because this year I will be in Vienna in May, and this musical only takes place in July and August.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to something similar that would be on between May 4 and 8? I want to go there with my mom. I know she would love it as much as I did, maybe even more.

I really liked the fact that it was so informal.

The other question I have has to do with coins. In Germany there are special coins released regularly by the government. I buy the ones that have the 10.00 Euro value, and I make sure I do not pay more than that for them. I buy them through a bank here.

I want to know if I can buy anything like that in Vienna while I am there. Do the main banks in Austria have coins like that in stock that people can buy for face value? If I know ahead of time I can make sure to go to the bank that offers it while I am there.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There is a special 2 Euro Coin out this year.

It celebrates 10 years Euro and WWU.

You should get this in any bank

Here a list of the special collectors coins in German. You should get them in every bank

Hi Hu San Niang,

Thanks for the info. It is super to have this list. I look forward to seeing these coins.

My mom who will be on the trip with me wants to buy some as gifts to take back to Canada.

Thanks again.

I think the musical show to which you refer was the Wiener Operettensommer, performing bits of operetta at the Theresianum in summer. This is their site:

http://www.wieneroperettensommer.at/

Does that sound like the show you attended?

I%26#39;ve not been to this show but I%26#39;m a bit of an operetta maniac. If you%26#39;d like to hear some operetta during your stay, there%26#39;s a couple of good things on at the Volksoper 4-8 May (see www.volksoper.at for details and ticket booking - which starts on 1 April for May performances).

One is the show %26quot;operettts%26quot; on 5 May which is three of the Volksoper%26#39;s tenors and a pianist doing a kind of revue with songs out of the popular operetta. I saw this back in September and I thought it was hilarious, and the music was great too. Visually it%26#39;s kind of bare - just a piano and four guys fooling about, so perhaps not quite what you had in mind. You%26#39;d need a basic grasp of German to follow some of it (though not all - there%26#39;s a lot of good old-fashioned slap-stick!)

Alternately, you could go to a full operetta at the Volksoper. There is a performance of Lehar%26#39;s Land des Lachelns on 6 May and Lustige Witwe by the same on 8 May. I like the production of Lachelns - it%26#39;s visually very spectacular - but the Witwe is a real operetta classic with some great music, so you might like that best. Probably of all three shows, I%26#39;d recommend the Witwe as the nearest thing to the show you saw in summer (there%26#39;s a can-can and everything - though why sopranos have to do the splits as well as sing these days beats me. They even do it at the Staatsoper, if you please - and IMO it added exactly nothing to that production of Forza del Destino!!)

Hope that helps!

It helps alot, Roley.

Now I have some choices, but I will probably let my mom decide which one she would like to see.

I don%26#39;t know much about Lehar%26#39;s music, but I think my mom would like that.

Anyway, thanks for the detailed descriptions of the shows, and the humour you added.

I love your style of writting.
