I am taking my daughter and a couple of her friend to Salzburg for the day as a 15th birthday treat. They would like to see the snow and maybe go tobogganing, trouble is our flight does not arrive till 9.45am and the snow shuttle leaves for the slopes at 8.30am. Any ideas for nearest slopes and how to get there without paying a fortune?

One option is to take the public bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, and from the B%26#39;gdn bus station at the RR station on another short bus trip toward the Koenigsee. Just before the Koenigsee is the Jenner gondola lift going to the top of the mountain of the same name. You don%26#39;t mention when your trip is scheduled, but the Jenner has snow for quite a while.
Another option is closer to Salzburg, along the way from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, at the Rossfeld Hochstrasse bus stop. From there is a bus toward the Obersalzberg, covering another ski area, but at a lower elevation, thus apt to have less snow.
Finally, probably the closest area to Salzburg is the Untersberg, also accessible by bus and lift. I have never been there in the winter, so don%26#39;t know what%26#39;s available for the kids.

Thanks for your help. We are going next Saturday, so will check snow cover for the options you suggested.

Do you have any idea which bus and where to get the bus to the Untersberg?
|||
No, I have always used my car.
Put another query on this forum specifically asking for the bus number ( or better yet, schedule web site ) for Salzburg to the Untersberg.
|||
The bus for the Untersberg is No. 25. It leaves from the main bus station, and various stages along the way, including Schloss Mirabel (Schloss side). It takes about 25 minutes.
There is also a bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden which leaves from the bus station (situated outside the main train station) which might actually be quicker than the train. The cable car rides to both the Untersberg and the Jenner are great with stunning views from both mountains. Care and good boots or shoes are always a necessity up there and you must stick to the paths.

Hi, we took our 12 year old and 8 year old in between Christmas and New Year to toboggan and see the snow but we drove so I can%26#39;t advise you on transport but we went to Radstadt to the toboggan there. We hired it at the bottom of the cable car, paid for hire of toboggan and cable car at the kiosk and then tobogganed from the top. 6km long run and took 20 mins or so to come down, it%26#39;s a eally pretty sledging track and you can go at whatever speed you wish as it%26#39;s not too busy, it%26#39;s open at night twice a week too but busier then. It took us 40 mins to drive it from Salzburg. We also went to Filzmoos, about 40 mins away too. They have a shorter toboggan run there and you can go up on ski lift to the start of the run and pay at the restaurant at the top to hire the toboggans. A lot of the toboggan runs have to be walked to and we didn%26#39;t have the time for that. These were the onlt 2 we found with lifts. You can sledge at the bottom of any nursery slopes and hire sledges at the sports shops. Hope this is useful. It%26#39;s a beautiful place in the snow, you%26#39;ll have a great tiem!

Hi Kingofspades
Went to Salzburg yesterday, had a fantastic time. We took a no 2 city bus from outside airport terminal to salzburg main train/bus station (cost 2 euro for adult, 1 euro child) Then took bus 840 from bus stop no 6 (outside shopping centre) to Bertchesgaden (cost 11.40 return adult 4.40 child)the journey took about 1 hour through beautiful countryside covered in snow. Then at Bertchesgaden Terminal changed to bus 841 to Jenner gondola only took about 10-15 mins (cost 4 euros return). We didnt take the gondola to the top of the mountain as we cannot ski, but there was plenty of snow at the bottom so bought little sledges for the girls to play, they built a snowman, had snowball fights etc. then could recommend the Jenner Kaser resturant which is next to the gondola. We really enjoyed the day, next time will do the regular sights in Salzburg. Hope you enjoy your day trip.
