bicycling around Durnstein

Can you rent bicycles in Durnstein? Is it best to go it alone, or private tour? I would love to coordinate bicycling with private wine tour etc. but dont know where to begin to look! I am assuming the bike paths along the river are simply followed.

Depending on where you are staying, many accomodations have bikes for guests to use.

If not several rental places

website partly in english

they will deliver a bike to you or you can easily find them in mautern if you are driving.

also convenient along the Danube in Krems /Stein not far upstream from the Boat landing.

german language , but some one will speak english in the shop.

No need for a tour or a guide.

The bike path is very easy to follow, well signed and most all places nicely paved.

Paths are on both sides of the river - the left side looking downstream - Krems , Dürnstein side more places to visit - The right side more quiet but great picture taking.

You can cross the river by fery at Dürnstein. Weissenkirchen and Spitz.

An alternative is to take one of the customized DDSG Kombi tours - one offers a bike option

Biking is a great way to see this area.

Often the paths are directly by the river , then through the vineyards and then following the old streets in a village- makes for a very nice and varied day.

These paths are very popular depending on the season- so you can easily folow others -

Many, many places to stop, a little food and often much wine - a great way to see this area.

We spent five glorious days and nights in Dürnstein. It was the highlight of our trip, even better than Vienna. We biked the entire time. We arranged for bike and childseat delivery at our hotel (the lovely Saenger Blondel) with:

The bike paths on both sides are lovely and easy (idiot-proof, really) to follow. We used to joke that the hardest decision of our day was %26quot;Which side of the Danube today?%26quot; The northern side goes through more villages and passes more heurigen while the southern side is more shady and passes through more orchards.

Before our visit, I obsessed about which heurigen would be open and even printed out a handy list from wachau.at. Big waste of paper. We just ended up stopping off at heurigens along the way when we needed refreshment.

One day we took the boat to Melk, toured the abbey, then rode our bikes down. One evening we rode our bikes to Unterloiben for a fab dinner at Loibnerhof.

I also printed out a handy map which I cannot find right now.
