I am planning a solo-trip to Austria for a week in May 2009 and hope to spend 3-4 days in Vienna and Salzburg each.
1. I usually prefer booking hotels/service apartments through venere.com and will do so for this trip as well.....please do recommend the area in Vienna that will be most suitable as a base from where I can explore the rest of the city.
2. Is it a good idea to get a bird%26#39;s eye view on Day 1 on the hop-on hop-off bus and then (once I have a better idea) do things on my own, using public transportation, on the other days?
3. What day-trips can one make from Vienna? Can these be done by oneself without relying on tour organisers?
4. I would love to attend a concert and/or theatre performance in English during my stay....any recommendations on that front?
Tripadvisor makes planning a trip simple and exciting...I am eagerly awaiting responses from destination experts.

1. The central district (Innere Stadt) is generally regarded as the perfect base. Look for hotels with post code 1010.
2. Buy a 24 hour (or longer) pass on the transport system and use that as your hop-on, hop-off bus!
3. There are numerous threads in this forum about day trips - use the search box above to find them.
4. To recommend a concert we%26#39;d need your exact dates!

I don%26#39;t know if you would call this a day trip, but I recommend possible deducting 2 days from the other part of the trip and go to Prague. Prague is absolutely amazingly, beautiful. (4 hours by train)

Thanks, Norman Cope.
I%26#39;ll check out the hotels that venere.com has to offer that lie in the central district (Innere Stadt) and with post code 1010.
Will look into the details regarding passes to the transport system and check route maps etc to be able to use it to my advantage.
I%26#39;m uncertain of exact dates yet...but will figure them out soon....and look up concert schedules accordingly.
Thanks for the prompt and comprehensive feedback.

Thanks buffalo66. Will look into the possibility of visiting Prague. Is a day good enough? Or should it be at least an overnight trip?

Prague is definitely NOT a day trip - it%26#39;s far too big and engrossing to dismiss in a day. If you wanted to spend time in Prague I%26#39;d knock a couple of days off Salzburg rather than Vienna as the former is much more compact (and does actually make a good day trip from Vienna). Ideally I%26#39;d save Prague for another trip, but if you wanted to do all three then 4 days Vienna including a day trip to Salzburg and 3 days Prague would work.
