My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe this summer and we would love to do a road trip from Vienna to Venice, and then fly back to the US from Venice. Is it possible to rent a car in Vienna and then drop it off in Venice? Are there international companies that will let you do that? Unfortunately, we don%26#39;t have time to drive back to Vienna. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you are willing to pay a huge fee to drop off the car in a country other than the one where you rent it as you desire, it can be done. I would check about the drop off fee before considering any plans.

What places do you intend to visit on your way from Vienna to Venice? In my opinion it would be better to take the train for the entire distance or at least from a station close to the state border [e.g. Villach or Klagenfurt]. The scenery seen from the train is likely to be more breathtaking. Don%26#39;t misunderstand me, I don%26#39;t want to entice you away from your initial plan of renting a car, but I fear that the drop-off charge will be pretty high.

Hi papciebabci,,
I have done one way rentals around the world a few times and it certainly is possible.
Just log on to Avis, Budget or your preferred rental company and check out the difference in price between returning it to the place of origin or dropping at a different location. Yes, there will usually be an increase in fee, but to me, sometimes its worth the little extra for the convenience.
The best thing about self drive, is that you can take a left turn if you see something interesting on the way. Although I love train travel, you just can’t be spontaneous on a train.
Good luck
Matt

I just entered some data for a one-week rental with Europcar during summer. Data is for a very small car (VW Fox). Cars with automatic shift are much more expensive. A VW Fox does not have any space for luggage... it%26#39;s just to show you how expensive a one-way rental into another country can be:
One week inside of Austria is € 288,46.
Same with return in Venice is € 580,55
Best is to check ALL rental car agencies... that%26#39;s some work but it can save you much money.
If you want to explore Austria and then travel to Venice, it%26#39;s better to leave the car in Klagenfurt or Villach and take the train or the InterCityBus to Venice (4 departures per day).
Cheap train/ICB tickets start from € 14 on.
