best cheap Staatsoper seats

On our first visit to Vienna this coming May, my husband and I want to see Richard Wagner%26#39;s Siegfried, which luckily is playing on the night that we are there. I checked the Staatsoper official website and tried to understand the seating plan.

Could somebody please tell me which among the seats in Preisgruppe 8 (about 10 to 13 euros - on the left and right hand side of the stage) are the best? I understand these are partial-view seats on either the loge, balcony or gallery. We don%26#39;t want to be standing the whole time so the Stehplatze tickets are out, especially since Siegfried is a long opera. We do want to see even just a little bit of the production, so we want to avoid no-view seats as much as possible.

We%26#39;d appreciate any info you can give. Thanks!

The first row on the sides (Ganzseite) on either the Gallery or the Balcony are the best of the cheap seats, and actually quite good seats considering the price.

The cheap seats in the back of the stalls (Loge) are crap, even if you could catch a glimpse of the scene the sound is terrible.

Absolutely agree with above. Generally speaking, the seats closer to the middle of the auditorium are to be preferred over those on the far sides, from where you%26#39;ll have a bad angle looking onto the stage. Obviously, this is already reflected in the price categories to a certain extent so that the cheaper seats are on the sides.

This means that in the same row seats with higher numbers are better than seats with lower numbers. Likewise, boxes with higher numbers offer better views than boxes with lower numbers.

Apart from the acoustic-problem in boxes, the view from the back seats in boxes 8, 9 and 10 is not too bad - the back seats in those boxes were sold for a much higher price until a few years ago. As for the boxes more on the side (to be avoided anyway), seats number 5, even though in 2nd row, have the worst view, because they are closest to the wall on the stage-side of the box.

To Frank and Nemorino79, thanks so much for your input. I wouldn%26#39;t have known the difference between the seats otherwise.

If you don%26#39;t mind taking the time to translate something I don%26#39;t understand from the Staatsoper seatplan, what do these phrases mean?

1. sitze mit Sichteinschrankung bzw. ohne Sicht

2. sitze mit Leselampe

It would really help me decide. Thanks again!

1. means %26quot;seats with restricted or no view%26quot;

2. means %26quot;seats with reading lights%26quot; - those are even further to the side of the auditorium and have a little table and reading light for people who wish to read the score while listening - mainly music students. View is even worse than for %26quot;restricted view%26quot; I would say.

Thanks again, nemorino79!
