Sporthotel Igls

I%26#39;m thinking of booking with Inghams at the Sportshotel Igls. Can anyone tell me if it%26#39;s good for access to the Skiing.

And also what the facilities are like please.

|||

Their website is www.sporthotel-igls.com you can look at the offerings.

This hotel has been owned and operated by the same family for many years. They must do something correcdt.

The hotel has a good spa facility and is not far downhill from the valley station of the main lift. This is maybe 200 meters away.

However due to the low altitude 900 meters or just a little more snow conditions toward the bottom can be found to be poor at times or icy.

|||

Thanks Beppo for information. I will look at website before I make my mind up.

Just looking at Inghams brochure makes you think there is plenty for the solo skiier at Igls. Do you have any other resorts that would suit me ?

Summer in Innsbruck with 3 year old

We will be spending July and 1/2 of August in Innsbruck this summer with our 3 year-old son. I%26#39;m wondering if anyone has any preschooler friendly suggestions for activities in or near Innsbruck and/or weekend trips. Also, we%26#39;d like to do some hiking with him, but aren%26#39;t sure the best way to do that (hiking backpack?). Thanks!

|||

I would contemplate the following activities:

Suggestion #1

Visit the Alpine Zoo (North side of Innsbruck) where you find wildlife whose habitat are the Alps. Definitely entertaining and interesting for toddlers and adults alike.

www.nordpark.com/en/winter/alpenzoo.html

Suggestion #2

In conjunction with the Alpine Zoo you could explore the Nordpark Area, a National Park with relatively rough mountains. The highest oberservation deck is at 2.250m above sea level (Hafelekar Station).

nordpark.com/en/winter/links-top/home-en.html

Suggestion #3

Take the tram #ST (=Stubaitalbhn) from Innsbruck to Fulpmes, a village in the Stubaital Valley.

Suggestion #4

What about swimming and boating at Lake Achensee? Great area there but be aware that the water temperatue of this lake is low.

|||

Thanks so much. This was really helpful. The website was great and Lake Achensee looks beautiful, we will definitely plan a trip up there. I appreciate your help! We%26#39;re looking forward to a great summer!

Skiing from Zurs to Lech

I see how one can ski from Lech to Zurs, but what is the route (which lifts) to ski from Zurs to Lech? Also, what is the difference between a %26quot;ski route%26quot; and a %26quot;ski run?%26quot; Is a %26quot;ski route%26quot; ungroomed or unmarked?

|||

This complete route is known as The White Ring and is very easy to follow.

If you go to the Lech website-

www.lech.at

then click on ski snd snowboard you find a heading White Ring.

This offers complete directions distances etc.

In Zurs you can take either the Seekopfbahn or Zurserseebahn back up towards the madlochbahn.

I find the Seekopfbahn more convenient as you come into Zurs.

Then to the madlochbahn to the top - skiing down ( Madloch- Zug) toward the little village of Zug.

Then Zugerbahn up to the top - skiing down toward Oberlaech and then down to Lech.

Well signed - easily done.

This route is groomed- sometimes that going down to Zug gets a little worn but generlly very good conditions and not extra hard skiing.

many stop at Zug for a little to eat or drink.

Ski route and lift maps are readily available at lift and ticket stations - carrsy one with you. Any dobt compare map at one of the direction posts.

Perhaps you know ski run where here identification may be route ( many with numbers to identify )

Ungroomed unmarked = off piste.

Note :warnings regarding off piste or ungroomed skiing , evey year people ignore this and find themselves in dangerous territory or in or make an avalanche.

A great place to enjoy good skiing and surroundings.

They also limit ticket sales to insure comfortable skiing and little wait times for lifts.

Salzburg Festival

I am going to Vienna end of July for a week. I am planning to book myself on a day escorted tour to Salzburg. Now that I found out that there will be Salzburg Festival at that time, I am not sure which should I do:

1. continue with the day tour, but buy a ticket to see one of the night show and stay the night in Salzburg. OR

2. continue with the day tour. Return another day to Salzburg and go for the Mozart Matinee show.

Any advice?

|||

You might want to look into the websites for the Mirabelle Palace and the Fortress (Hoensalzburg, probably off on the spelling) they have the best shows in my opinion. If it is something you like then go for it, you will not regret it. My wife and I traveled to Salzburg many times during the festival. They have outdoor shows in the day if the weather permits and St. Peter%26#39;s plays a wonderful free concert at 12:35pm exactly every day. It consists of a choir, pipes, strings wind and percussion instruments, it is quite a performance, especially for free and many people don%26#39;t know about it. I thought the Fortress gave the best show, since they start at sunset and you see the city and mountains in the background while watching your show. The show ends around 10, so it is even possible to get a late train back to Vienna if you don%26#39;t want to spend money on a hotel. Be prepared for the festival crowds.

|||

Before making any decision I think you should have a look to the Festsiele website.

www.salzburgerfestspiele.at

This is a great time from July 25 to August 30.

The sites recommended above Mirabell Palace and Hohensalzburg are not part of the specific festival. They offer tourist oriented music for most parts of the year not just during the fest.

You may find some concerts, operas part of the Fest could already be sold out as they are very popular.

At least by having a look at the schedule you will find what is available during your time of visit and whether it appeals to you.

Then decide on a way to best visit.

Salzburg is very easy to tour on your own without resorting to a tour.Frequent trains each hour day and long into the night allows you much ability to decide yourself what you wish to see, not just by the tour.

|||

Beppo gives good advice - the concerts at the Fortress etc are quite expensive and for that money, you may as well hear something special at the Festival.

Another alternative is a concert in the Salzburg Cathedral. These are modestly priced (about 25 eur for a ticket) but the music is wonderful, especially performed in such a magnificent setting. This summer the Cathedral choir are performing Mozart%26#39;s Kronungsmesse and also the Requiem mass on dates in July and August. I%26#39;ve been to their performance of the Requiem mass twice, and it is very good indeed (much better than the performance of the same piece given in the Salzburg University church by another, much smaller choir). You can read more about it on the Salzburg Cathedral%26#39;s music pages, here:

http://www.kirchen.net/domkonzerte/

Tickets can be bought when you get to Salzburg (as I recall, there%26#39;s a little booth selling tickets near the steps outside the cathedral).

If you%26#39;re looking for a cheap hotel to stay overnight in Salzburg, there%26#39;s a moderately priced pension only a block or so from the cathedral - the Pension Chiemsee. It%26#39;s kind of basic but the rooms are clean and have good bathrooms. There%26#39;s no lift but if you%26#39;re travelling light, carrying bags up to the third floor won%26#39;t be a problem! This is their website: http://www.sbg.at/hotel-chiemsee/

From the pictures, looks like they%26#39;ve redecorated since I was there - but the prices are still quite good for the super-central location. The Hotel Weisse Taube is an another alternative for moderately priced but decent accommodation right in the centre - see www.weissetaube.at I prefer the WT because it%26#39;s a little quieter - but in Festival time Salzburg is pretty noisy at night, where-ever you stay!

|||

I spent 38 USD for the tickets to the fortress and 25 USD for the palace

|||

sorry got cut off, I bought my tickets in the tourist information office across from the Mozart statue, next to the Amex office.

|||

Thank you so much guys for the info. I am going to be on my own, so I thought booking myself on a tour would be safer. But with the festival, I feel that I should take a bit risk so that I could get the best of Salzburg.

|||

Lady Goofy

You make a good decision in my opinion.

When you have an opportunbity to seeand hear the offerings of the festival in the surroundings of this city - take full advantage.

You can do this on your own and customize your time to full advantage.

Regarding tickets, with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic among others, opera and drama do these and not the palace or fortress venues mentioned above. Yes, you can find tickets at the tourist office or elsewnere but these are mediocre performances compared to the offerings of the festival.

The Tourist office or Festspiele website can assist with accomodations . Just a little outside of the old city and prices drop a little.

But make arrangementsd quickly . These days are very popular. Many locals from Austria and nearby germany just go fot the day and evening performances .

Vienna bike rental

Any suggestions for renting good quality bikes/equipment in Vienna? We plan to take them to Linz by train and then ride back to Vienna over a 4 day period.

|||

Pedal Power can assist -

not just bikes but info too - near to the Prater. I friend highly recommends them and their good advice.

www.pedalpower.at

another place located on the bike path as it enters Vienna ( in Nussdorf immediately next to the danube

www.donau-fritzi.at

I know a little about the bike paths along the Danube - they are very good and well marked - both sides of the river.

|||

Just got back from a long trip and saw your post. Thanks a lot for the suggestion! We will use Pedal Power, I think.

Any good pensions in Kaprun?

Hi,

looking for a half -board pension in Kaprun -clean,friendly with good food, nothing upmarket just a good Austrian hospitality and clean rooms.

Any recommendations?

We will consider Bed %26amp; Breakfast ( we did that last year) but are leaning towards half board ( budget!!!) for convenience.

many thanks!!

|||

Hi,

Try the following site www.zellamsee-kaprun.com

I have booked rooms on many previous occasions with this site and have always been happy with our accomodation. I always book B%26amp;B as we prefer to eat out when on holidays, but half board option is available with most accomodations. I have stayed at the following Apts / pensions:

Johannahof

Nindl apts

Apts Toni

Haus Patricia

Chalet Hohe Tauern

All were close to the town, and I would recommend any of them without hesitation.

If you would like any further information on them let me know.

Vienna Suggestions for October

My husband and I will be traveling on a Trafalgar Tour thru Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Salsburg and Munich this coming October. We are pretty excited since we will arrive on October 2 and have the opportunity to experience Octoberfest in Munich for 1 night. My husband loves Beer! We will have one evening free in Vienna and would enjoy some suggestsions for a great local dinner, good beer, and friendly people. We will be staying at the Hilton Danube and have no idea were that is, except I am assuning by it%26#39;s name it is near the Danube. Also if I wanted to purchas some souveniers to take home for grandchildren, were would be a good place to shop and what would I be shopping for...thanks in advance.

|||

Several suggestions for beer and good food

Salmbräu

www.salmbraeu.at

very near to the Belvedere Palace - perhaps you wish to combine a visit with food and beer

Fischerbräu

www.fischerbraeu.at

a little further from cizy center but an easy ride on streetcar #38

7 Stern Bräu

www.7stern.at

closest to city center near Museum Quarter an not too far to the UBahn Ü-2

excelent selection of food and various beers

The Hilton Danube of course along the Danube - outside of city center. Not really convenient for nearby dining or shopping.

Fortunately the new UBahn U-2 end station a few minutes walk away and takes you to city center relativey quickly

Souvenirs - most every tourist site has a shop . several places along Kartnerstrasse , Graben in city center pedestrian Zone.

Usual tourist stuff from T- shirts , hats, other things more interesting - enough that you find something for everyone - you just need money.

Snow reord for Igls

As a possibility of Igls being m next destination next year for Skiing with Inghams, can anyone tell me what the snow record is like there please.

Is it a sure thing for snow in Mid January ?

The area look very attractive, with other things to do.

|||

The current snow report can be accessed here:

http://www.bergfex.com/patscherkofel/

The Patscherkofel Mountain, whose peak ist at 2.250m above sea level, shouldn%26#39;t be a problem at all. In Igls itself, which is down in the valley, the snow depth could be weak. The area is indeed attractive offering a lot of other leisure activities.

|||

Thanks Mickey for getting back.

I%26#39;m concidering Igls as it%26#39;s seems a relivitally short trip from airport.

As I%26#39;m going alone I also thought there would be other things to do.

|||

wallyynot

Have you considered Seefeld very short transfer also approx 25 mins and I think the snow record is better as the town is higher.

TORII

|||

Just seen on your profile you have done Seefeld ,we have just returned home once again from a fantastic holiday ,this time we also used Inghams and we were very satisfide and will be returning next year.

TORII

|||

Hi TORII

Really liked Seefeld, especially when the wife comes as a non Skiier. Quick transfer which I like.

Can get short of snow on the nursery slopes, but always had plenty on slopes.

There use to be a lovely shop where they did the best hot chocolate, but unfortuantly it has gone.

This year I went to Lapland again, brill.

I do like Austria, very scenic.

Deffinantly no problems with snow in Lapland.

Where to go after Vienna?

I%26#39;ll be in Vienna the last week in April, and will have another 5-7 days to travel around Europe. Recommendations for places to go that are easy to get to from Vienna (by direct train/plane) that will be somewhat relaxing? We%26#39;ll have already spent a whirlwind week in Germany and Prague prior. TIA.

~MAC

|||

Mac - your criteria (reachable by direct train/plane) opens up just about the whole of Europe! Is it posssible for you to be more specific? Do you want to stay in Austria or its immediate neighbours?

|||

you can relax in St. Wolfgang or Hallstat, both are very small each with breathtaking views of the mountains from a stunning lake. I liked Wolfgang a bit more, since it was a little bigger and had a bit more to do.

|||

I agree with BrightTravels re Hallstatt etc. Since you are in Austria, you simply must go to the Salzkammergut region - it%26#39;s spectacular!

An easy 4-5 hr train trip from Vienna, and the region includes the above towns as well as the beautiful city of Salzburg, and picture postcard villages in the lake district. ie. Bad Aussee, Bad Ischl, Alt Aussee and many more.

You really won%26#39;t go wrong with a few days in this region. It just doesn%26#39;t get more beautiful.

|||

Try the Wachau region, an easy 1 1/4 hour train trip from Vienna. We spent five nights in Dürnstein after my hubby%26#39;s business trip to Innsbruck and before our four nights in Vienna. Perfect relaxation with cycling through vineyards along the Danube, boat and ferry trips, fabulous food, touring the Melk monastery, beautiful castles and more. So much to see in such a small area.

Wachau is also a UNESCO world heritage site.

|||

Budapest if you are going by train. Or take a small plane from Vienna to Venice and surrounding areas in Italy. I like Paris as well, but it is not as relaxing as Venice.

train from vienna to prague onseptember 12 by train

i want to travel by train from vienna to prague by train and i would like to know the charges ane the time taken by train to prauge and also from prague to munich by tain and back to vienna can it be done in 4 days thanking you francy

|||

Regular fare between Víenna and Prague is approximately 50€. Discounted tickets also available but subject to availability. Travel duration varies between 4 hours and 4h30min depending on train.

http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/e

4 days for Prague and Munich including transportation from/to Vienna is hardly feasible. It depends on how much you wanna see of a city.

|||

Hi,

To ride on this post - what is the cheapest transport from Prague to Munich?

If the time taken is too long, then which alternative would be considered more appropriate although may not be the cheapest.

**

From Austria to Prague - if we have the Einfach-Raus-Ticket from which town would be the best to disembark and head to Prague?

Just purely looking at map, we are thinking of travelling Innsbruck-Zell am See- Salsburg-Linz-Cecky Krumlov- Prague-Munich-Zurich

But we can change towns if it is more scenic and cheaper to get to Prague

Sorry for asking all about transport. I have done quite a lot of research but navigating through the details got me all confused especially when Europe is very far and foreign to where I stay.

Thanks all for your kind guidance.

Regards

Day

|||

The Einfach-Raus-Ticket is only good on REGIONAL TRAINS (abbreviation: R,REX,ER,S) to Summerau. It is NOT VALID on national and international fast trains. If you have enough time you can save a lot of money with the ERT. Summerau is located on the Linz-Ceske Budejovice railroad at the state border. From there you need a regular ticket. As you go to Cesky Krumlov you should also contemplate semi-private van transportation from Linz Main Station to Krumlov using the services of LoboShuttle (http://www.shuttlelobo.cz/).

Bratislava and Sopron

I%26#39;m visiting Vienna next week and am considering taking a day trip to Bratislava and/or Sopron.

Do you think it would be possible to visit both cities in one day? I just want to see the highlights--I won%26#39;t linger.

Or would you recommend a day each?

Basically, I just want to say I%26#39;ve been to Slovakia and Hungary, since both will be close by. Let me know if you would recommend other cities instead.

|||

Will you have a car?

Bratislava is larger than Sopron and also features more sights. Bratislava%26#39;s center is a gem and partly looks like a little Vienna. Sopron is nice but not a highlight that everybody should see. The old part (center) is cute but small. If you only intend to see the highlights in both places, it should be feasible by car. Public transportation between Vienna and Sopron/Bratislava is very good, but Bratislava to Sopron would require a transfer again in Vienna if time counts.

|||

I won%26#39;t have a car, so I%26#39;m trying to figure out if it%26#39;s possible to see at least a bit of Slovakia and Hungary in the same day on a quick trip from Vienna...

|||

Now that%26#39;s a challenge :) Here%26#39;s a suggested itinerary:

Dept Vienna Sudbahnhof 0805, arr. Bratislava 0903 (get bus no. 91 to Nový Most - the bridge that looks like the Starship Enterprise - and have a walk around town.

Get back to the station (Petržalka) the way you came and get the 1233 to Gyor (Hungary), changing trains in Parndorf (Austria), which is very easy. You arrive in Gyor at 1413.

Get the 1837 train straight back to Vienna Westbahnhof, arriving at 2008. You will find Bratislava and Gyor to be very similar, but I wouldn%26#39;t say that Bratislava is like Vienna, other than the river, but make your own mind up :)

Let us know how you got on!

|||

I would suggest doing the following itinerary:

Vienna%26gt;Bratislava(SK)%26gt;Fertöd(HU)%26gt;Sopron(HU)%26gt;Vienna (or reversely)

Why Fertöd? Because there is a great palace, the Versailles of Hungary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eszterh%C3%A1za

To reach Fertöd, Hungary you need to take a Vienna-bound train from Bratislava-Petrzalka to Parndorf, where you transfer to another train heading for Fertöszentmiklos, Hungary. Alight at %26#39;Fertöszeplak-Fertöd%26#39; and walk 1500m in Easterly direction. After you are done with exploration, walk Southerly through the great park to reach the railway station of Fertöszentmiklos and take a local train to Sopron, do your programme there and board a regional express train (REX) to Vienna.

http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/e

|||

Do be careful when you get to Parndorf - the temptation to visit the huge Designer Outlet Centre just out of town may prove too great.........

|||

I just checked the train availability between Bratislava and Fertöd/Sopron. It is just awful and hardly feasible. If it is that important for you to visit both countries/places, do it seperately on different days. Between Vienna and Bratislava/Sopron you can rely on a vast amount of trains.

|||

Thanks so much for all this good advice!

I am considering taking the train from Vienna to Gyor, Hungary.

Then I can take a train from Gyor to Bruck an der Leitha, Austria (on the line toward Vienna) and switch trains to go to Bratislava.

Then I can take a train back from Bratislava to Vienna, returning the same day.

I still need to check the schedules more closely and see how feasible this all is, but so far it looks good to me. Let me know if you have any thoughts. I plan to review all this tomorrow and head out this weekend.

I really appreciate it!

|||

After looking over the train schedules, I have changed my plans and think I will just go in and out of Vienna, with a short visit to each location:

Wien S-Sopron 8:36-9:50

Sopron-Wien S 13:11-14:30

Wien S-Bratislava P 15:05-16:03

Bratislava P-Wien W 19:11-20:28

This is all for this Saturday.

Thanks for all your help, and let me know if anything looks amiss here.

|||

Sorry for the multiple messages--I can%26#39;t find a way to erase my previous comment, which was based on an earlier thought--I meant to post this instead:

I think I will follow the route GCEK recommended:

Dept Vienna Sudbahnhof 0805, arr. Bratislava 0903

Get back to the station (Petržalka) the way you came and get the 1233 to Gyor (Hungary).

Get the 1837 train straight back to Vienna Westbahnhof, arriving at 2008.

Thanks for such great advice--I can%26#39;t wait to go!

|||

It seems you can%26#39;t make a decision! :)

Is it really necessary to accomplish on one single day? In my opinion Sopron is more attractive than Györ....

slap dancing

I will be traveling to Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Vienna the second week of March. What will the weather be like, and is there a place to catch a %26quot;slap dancing%26quot; show?

|||

For the dancing part of your inquiry, check %26quot;Schupllatteln%26quot; at Google. For the weather, look at past statistic for these cities on www.weather.com

|||

Maybe it%26#39;s just me, but I have a feeling that Schuplatteln is more of a Bavarian thing so you might be better off asking in the Munich forum (if you haven%26#39;t already) for that one.

cheap uk flights to vienna

Anybody point me in the right direction for cheap flights from midlands or north uk to Vienna? Many thanks!

|||

My idea of UK geography is a bit hazy so excuse me if my suggestions don%26#39;t fall into your ideal geographical area -!

From Luton Easyjet fly direct to Vienna and back once a day; prices are usually not bad. Otherwise you%26#39;re looking at at least one stop. Manchester and Birmingham both seem to have a variety of one-stop flights on different carriers so you might be able to find something competitively priced from there. Lufthansa flies out of Manchester and they codeshare with Austrian Airlines so there are quite good connexions on those routes - and not bad prices - about 160 pounds and up. BMI flight out of Birmingham and codeshare with both LH and OS but I find BMI much, much more expensive so probably Manchester is your best bet...

|||

The honest answer is there are no cheap flights from the north of England to Vienna. Roley gives the best ways to fly to Vienna, but a lot of the one-stop flights involve a few hours at a hub airport making a total journey time of anything from 4 to 6+ hours and they don%26#39;t come cheap by budget airline standards.

Recently I%26#39;ve been flying with Slovak budget airline SkyEurope from Manchester to Bratislava which is just over an hour%26#39;s bus journey from Vienna with several connections a day. But there are two problems:

1) The flight has been moved to a later time making arrival in Vienna very late in the evening

2) SkyEurope have a lot of financial problems making their future somewhat uncertain. See this recent discussion on here:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g190454-i147-k25…

|||

Many thanks, Roley and Norman. Very helpful and useful information which is much appreciated.

|||

While the following does not assist those of northern areas, I noticed an advert in a Vienna newspaper some days ago that I thought was a value.

Aerlingus www.aerlingus.com

In April as low as 5.99- 39 euro one way and 57 euro round trip Vienna _ London Gatwick.

|||

Easyjet also now fly from Gatwick to Vienna, but I agree that if you can fly into Bratislava it%26#39;s not far from Vienna.

You might also be able to fly into Linz, Graz or Salzburg, which are a little further but still only a couple of hours on the train. In the case of Graz, it%26#39;s a scenic journey as well.

|||

Many thanks Beppo-7 and Brickie. All this info very helpful and much appreciated.

Rail Pass 2 vs 3 countries price

This summer I%26#39;m doing a 3 week tour or Germany and Austria so I decided to buy rail pass. Germany-Austria cost $435 for 10 days, but if I buy a 3 country pass I pay 414. Why do I pay less and getting more?

|||

You need to ask the company that sells and issues such passes. How shall we know what product you saw and what the difference is?

|||

I think if you play your cards right and get local passes, you will be paying a lot less - ask in the Germany forum about such passes for Germany. For long-distance trains you can get tickets for 29 Euros if you book them far enough in advance. Point-to-point local tickets are generally good value and can be bought on the day.

Raileurope usually works out quite expensive and is only really economical if you intend doing several long-distance journeys in a short space of time.

If you work out your itinerary first then place another post to see what people think.

OBB online ticket

Hi all,

I just purchase an online ticket from Strasbourg to Vienna using the OBB website. This is for the overnight train. I have never boarded a night train before (in fact never boarded any train before). I printed out the ticket. Unfortunately, the whole ticket is in German and I don%26#39;t know German.

My question is, when I board the train, do I just present the printed ticket and the credit card I used to purchase the ticket?

If you guys have done this before, I would really appreciate your input on what the steps are. It would be helpful to know what I can expect. I brought the 6 person couchette so that I can at least lie down.

Thanks

|||

Yes, the printout is your ticket that you show the train attendant. I don%26#39;t think that the credit card needs to be shown either.

|||

Hi, I purchased online tickets from DeutschBahn last year and had to show the printout as well as the credit card--they scanned both of them and punched the printout (which I had to show more than once along the trip so keep it handy). I%26#39;m pretty sure you%26#39;ll have to show your credit card. I%26#39;ve just bought OBB online tickets for this April and they look exactly the same as the DB ones.

Season in Seefeld

Does anyone know if the lifts will be open after the 28th March or will the season be over? I am looking for a late holiday hope to be able to get to Seefeld by 28th March

|||

As the Easter Holiday are in April this year, you will face ski lifts in operation.

|||

Do you know if the snow forcast for late March, early April is good?

|||

Seefeld advertises being open until April 15 ?

Impossible to predict amount or condition of snow.

Quite possible that the small T- bar lifts in town would have no snow by beginning of April.

Probably best skiing higher on Rosshutte. Lower areas may have some trouble but who knows.

|||

If you look on town website - click on the various webcams on you can monitor amounts of snow- currently excelent conditions and some new snow .

Hiking in Austria-Where to go??

Hello! I am planning my first trip to Europe and I need help with the Austria portion of my trip. I am going to be coming from Bavaria (Munich/Fussen) into Austria. I%26#39;d like to see one of the bigger cities and then go somewhere to hike in the mountains. I am trying to find a mountain town that is easily accessible from the bus or train, not extremely far from one of the major cities (probably Salzburg), and has several nice mountain trails. I am looking for either moderately difficult-strenuous all day long hikes or 1-2 day long hikes. I would like to hike for 3-4 days total. The areas I am thinking about are Schladming Dachstein area, Filzmoos, or Zell am See but i am very open to any suggestions. Filzmoos seems like it may be very nice, does anyone have any experience here? Also, I am unsure if I should rent a car or not. I would prefer to use public transportation, would this be a possibility? If anyone could recommend a good town or good hiking/backpacking trails that I may be interested in, I would really appreciate it! I could also really use some help with transportation recommendations. Thanks a lot!

|||

The mountains around Kitzbuhl are very nice for hiking, not to high, not to step, but with fantastic views (for example at the %26quot;Wilde Kaiser%26quot; or the %26quot;Kitzbueheler Horn%26quot;). Hiking season starts at end of May (which is rather early for Tyrol).

If you get the Kitzbueheler Alpen Summer Card you can use alle 31 lifts in the area AND - for an additional 2 Euros per day - also the public bus system, which is quite good. Nevertheless public transport does not get you to hidden valleys, mountain lakes or old moutnain huts. IF you want this, you should definitly hire a car.

Places to stay:

If you want a typical Austrian/ Tyrolian mountain village you shpould stay in Westendorf. If you prefer a small Tyrolian town with good shooping facilitys and many restaurants to choose, St.Johann is your choice. The famous Kitzbühel is always worth a visit. All places are about 1 hour away from Salzburg and 1,5 hours away from Munich.

This map gives you a good overview over the area:

Buchinger Hotel-Garni GÄSTEHAUS

Hi,

Anyone knows how to get to BUCHINGER Hotel-Garni GÄSTEHAUS? Is there any bus stop near this hotel? Is it by bus 2560? If yes, can I know which bus stop to alight? Thanks!

|||

Unfortunately your post omits some important facts needed to assist you.

I assume that you refer to the Buchinger in St. Wolfgang as you do not mention the town for this place in your posting.

You also do not mention your place of departure.

The bus # 150 runs from Salzburg to Strobl. You would then change to bus #2560 to St. Wolfgang.

I suggest that you inquire of the Hotel as to the best stop for you.

their website

I do not know this place but it appears on the west side of the town.

|||

Sorry for the lack of info given.

I%26#39;m indeed going to St. Wolfang and departing from salzburg.

I%26#39;m actually looking for accommodation with a room of 2 for app EUR70 (on a tight budget) per night where I can enjoy the lakesights from the room. Do you have any recommendation?

|||

I think the village of St. Gilgen makes a nicer stay than St. Wolfgang. Stii on Wolfgangsee - less conjested at busy times.

it is more convenient - easy access by bus#150 from salzburg without a transfer.

The boat on the lake makes for nice transfers to visit other villages.

Overall a nicer and more compact village in my opinion. look for the many comments about it

www.wolfgangsee.at

and use search function - insert st gilgen numerous good comments - good choice of reasonable accomodations restaurants etc.

Travelling from Salzburg to Amsterdam

I want to fly from Salzburg to Amsterdam (cheap as poss) wondering if anyone knows of an airline that does a direct flight cant seem to find one??? Help!

|||

Salzburg%26#39;s airport is pretty small and serves unregular charter flights as well as a few scheduled flights to Vienna, Frankfurt and London. In this case it is better to go to Munich in order to catch a flight.

|||

Thanks for the tip. Do u mean catch a flight to Munich then another Munich to Amsterdam? Any idea what a good airline is price wise for both? Thanks

|||

No, I meant to take the train to Munich whose airport is a large-scale one. Munich is only 150km apart from Salzburg.

|||

Maybe easier for you to take the direct flight with Transavia from Rotterdam to Salzburg. Operating several times a week in winter.

Budget travellers going to Vienna

Hi,

We are 2 girls on a tight budget going to Austria in the month of April from India. We have 4 days and we plan to visit Salzburg and Vienna.

As we are on a shoe string budget and are looking for very inexpensive places to stay. Can you please recommend pension house/hostels or b%26amp;b for us?

I was hoping to find something in the range of 30 euro/night.

Thanks in advance!

cell phones in Salzburg

I will be studying in Salzburg from March-July and am trying to figure out what kind of sim card to buy. I have found a website that lists providers in Austria and includes info about prices and everything, and I have also looked through other forums on here, but I haven%26#39;t found much info on my specific question.

Does anyone know the differences between the major providers (T-Mobile, Orange, A1) and their virtual networks (such as Yesss!, Telering, Wowww!, etc)? The virtual providers provide much cheaper rates in most cases, but is there some catch? For example, is the service poor or are there other strings attached?

I will be using my phone mostly within Austria and already have an unlocked phone to use. I%26#39;m just trying to figure out which provider will be the best and cheapest. Any tips would be helpful.

Thanks!

|||

As always, best and cheapest are (mostly) mutually exclusive. A1 was the very first network in Austria and is (still) used by many companies/businessmen because they also offer the best coverage. A1 is the most expensive in many ways but still very successful. Their daughter/subsidiary %26quot;bob%26quot; is pretty good and cheap. But during network congestion it could be that your incoming calls are diverted to your mailbox meaning you don%26#39;t have any priority.

T-Mobile was the first privately-operated network in Austria (formerly: max.mobil). I am customer there since 1998 and still mostly satisfied. Their plans are cheaper than the ones of A1. Coverage of TMA very good, probably slightly worse than A1.

To make it short - all networks provide reliable service countrywide. The difference between real and virtual is mainly the (lower) price of the subsidiaries as their customer services are limited (e.g. bob only offers a 0900 hotline with much higher costs per minute). In terms of general usability there is no difference. If you don%26#39;t need any %26quot;extras%26quot;, then you will be fine with.

Is air conditioning a must in Vienna in June?

My family and I will be traveling to Vienna during the first week in June and we are currently deciding on accomodations. Many are highly rated by guidebooks, but don%26#39;t have AC. Just wondering if this is a deal breaker. I live in Texas and couldn%26#39;t survive the month of June without AC. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

|||

I have been to Houston in May 2008 and sweat a lot (in the public). So I understand your concerns, but Austria%26#39;s climate is not comparable to the one of Texas. Although we%26#39;ve occasionally experienced heat in May and June, I would not classify it as normal, hence you don%26#39;t need aircondition at this time.

apartment in salzburg

I travel to salzburg in july for a week and i find two apartment to stay.

one in Weiserstrasse and the other in Rupertgasse.

Can anyone tell me what street is better or safety, close to bus transport and supermarket. I travel with my daughter 15 years old.

Thanks

|||

Salzburg is a safe city but out of the two areas you describe I would choose Rupertgasse. The bus system in Salzburg is very efficient so wherever you stay the buses will be close by. Rupertgasse is more convenient for getting to the old town and all the tourist sights.

|||

I am not sure about the apartments you mentioned, but I just returned from Salzburg and stayed in a great apartment in a excellent location on Furstenbrunnstrasse, supermarket(Spar)right outside the door, about a 5 minute walk to all the major sights in the old town. Bus was right outside too, but no need to take it as all the sights were within walking distance. Very safe neighbourhood as well.

vienna centre.?

hi hopeing to go two nights in march need hotel right in centre to avoid to mutch walking . any recommendations. where is centre anyway ? thanks barney

|||

The centre of Vienna is enclosed by the Ringstraße and the Donaukanal and is officially know as the Innere Stadt.

I recommend that you use the following website to find suitable hotels:

www.booking.com

|||

The city center is the First district descibed as above . easy to recognize anything in that area as the postal code is 1010.

Several hotels

4 star Steigenberger Herrenhof

on Herrengasse - a 3 minute walk to the Hofburg Palace complex and other sightseeing . 50 meters to the famous Cafe Central.

very close to the bus stop for bus # 2A and 3 A that take you through the city center.

Ubahn U-3 Herrengasse stop just a few steps away.

many retaurnts and shopping too.

This is a newly opened hotel in a renovated building.

www.steigenberger.com

Also good -Hotel Pertschy ( formerly Pension Pertschy ) on Hapsburgergasse - near most everything - very close to Spanish Riding School and Hofburg -

many posters here like this place- good restaurants nearby-

if you like antiques- many antique and art galleries near too.

Both offer good comfort and ideal location.

for sightseeing info

www.wien.info

|||

Pertschy website

www.pertschy.com

|||

Barney - my friend Vertical gives you good advice, but there are probably dozens of decent hotels in Vienna we could recommend. They all differ in price, ambience and decor. Can you give us any clues about what you%26#39;re looking for?

Also Vienna has what is regarded as one of the world%26#39;s best transport systems so don%26#39;t be afraid to look at hotels outside the Innere Stadt - often you get more for less and they can be a few minutes away from the centre.

|||

How to get from the airport to the Hilton Plaza hotel?

Hi

Try as I might, I can%26#39;t find anywhere with directions from how to get from the airport to the Hilton Plaza hotel. Is anyone able to help me?

Thanks :-)

|||

Depends on your wish and the cost willing to pay-

the quickest and easiest is a dedicated taxi transfer - about 29 euro

25-30 minutes directly to hotel entrance on the Ringstrasse

www.airportdriver.at

Airport transfer bus to Morzinplatz/ Schwedenplatz ( 6 euro ) then transfer to streetcar #1 to either Borse stop or Schottentor stop ( 1,70 euro ).

Bus runs about every 30 minutes

Sbahn train from airport to Praterstern - then UBahn U-2 to Schottentor stop 3,40 euro

other alternatives too but the above probably the easier ways.

for more detailed info - schedules

www.viennaairport.com

under to/from the airport.

|||

This is great thanks - we will be travelling by public transport - I forgot to put this in my post!

|||

Depending on your plans when you%26#39;re in Vienna you may want to get a city transport pass from the airport rather than a single use ticket. In that case you%26#39;d need to buy the appropriate pass and a supplementary €1.70 ticket to cover that part of the journey from the airport to the city boundary. Look at these Inside Pages on TA for further information.

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g190454-s301/Vienna…

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g190454-s301/Vienna…

Bear in mind that your hotel is located on the boulevard surrounding the historic centre and many attractions will be in walking distance.

Vienna Airport to Hilton Vienna Danube

Please could someone advise how to get to Hilton Vienna Danube from Vienna Airport. We arrive next Sunday. Like to go by train or bus if possible.

Thanks

Take a city-bound train and alight at Wien-Praterstern, where you need to transfer to subway line U2 (purple one) towards %26#39;Stadion%26#39; (=Vienna Stadium). Get off at Stadion and walk the rest (approx. 400m).

Price: 3.40€

|||

Mikey,

Thank you very much, really appreciated.

|||

John(?) - instead of 2 x €1.70 tickets (making the €3.40 fare Mikey mentions) consider getting some sort of travel pass at the airport and one €1.70 extra ticket (to cover the part outside the city) for the journey to the hotel. It is not centrally situated so you%26#39;ll need to use public transport regularly to get to any of the sights so a period pass could save you money. Look here for the options:

If booked well in advance you can get the Europa-Spezial offer for € 29 (2nd class) or € 39 (1st class). Payment by credit card, you will get a PDF-document, just print it out. Mind that offers are not flexible and bound to a train.

|||

I recently took the ICE from Munich to Vienna in 4h 15min (as stated by Norman). Direct trains to Vienna depart approximately every two hours (six times a day).

|||

Thank you very much for advice. How do I get Europa Special Offer?

|||

It is all shown on the German railways DB Website:

Planning a wedding in Salzburg

Please help.

I am planning a private wedding ceremony for my fiance and I in Salzburg in June 2010.

I know I could hire a wedding planner, but they all cost a fortune, and we really only need a venue, a carriage, flowers, and a photographer since there are no guests, no meal, etc.

I%26#39;m doing marginally well planning this my own so far. However, at present, I%26#39;m stuck on a photographer. I have spent hours online (including the salzburg.info site) trying to find what I consider to be a decent photographer, but the only ones that I%26#39;m finding are 3,000 Euro and up. That%26#39;s fair if it%26#39;s a day-long-wedding, but ours is much more simple than that, %26amp; doesn%26#39;t necessitate a 3k-5k package!

Please, please help suggest a photographer who has an online gallery I can look through...

(And if you want to recommend a florist, I%26#39;ll take recommendations over blindly finding one over the internet.)

Thank you kindly!

|||

i got married in austria almost 5 years ago in zell am see - my advice would be to use the owner of your hotel - thats what i did and it all turned out perfect !!! we had 29 guests who all had a free bar and a meal, a beautiful wedding cake - coffee , the ceremony arranegd and a horse and carriage as well as photos and a lovely wedding gift from the hotel all for under £2500 - try and get that at home - it woldn%26#39;t even pay for the photographer and cars - any other advice just email me

|||

Hi Jodi==

Do you want a photographer from the U.S. versus one from Austria?

Jason Taylor :)

|||

Try contacting the Stiftskeller St. Peter restaurant and see if you can gain some information from them. I think this is a very popular place for celebrations so they might have a recommendation for a photographer and a florist.

Hi, I got married in May 2006 in Salzburg. We used a photographer called Silvana Snoy. At Photo August. 1 Paris-Lodron-Strasse. We found her by chance as the photo studio was right next door to the Austrotel hotel where we were staying. She is very pleasant and will accomodate any ideas that you have. We got married in the Mirabell Palace and she took alot of photo%26#39;s in there (as it was raining)!!! But we went outside later in the grounds and had our photo taken on the steps (as in sound of music). It cost approx £200.00 and for that she was with us throughout the ceremony and after for about 1 1/2 Hours in total. We recieved 30 prints 7x5 size and we also bought all the negatives which in total had 77 photos on. I have looked on the internet but cannot find a web site for her. But for the price we were very happy with the photo%26#39;s. Alot cheaper than here. Hope i have been some help.Let me know if you want any other info.I can%26#39;t reccommend a florist as i got my flowers from a village called Lofer where we were staying at the time.Sorry!

|||

Single ticket is € 2,80

Single ticket incl. public transport in Innsbruck (mit Kernzone) is € 3,60

You need the Ticket mit Kernzone if you change bus/train/tram in Innsbruck. So if you plan to take the train to Innsbruck and then trams/busses to your final destination in Innsbruck.

Day ticket € 5,60

Day ticket mit Kernzone: € 8

Week ticket € 11,50

Week ticket mit Kernzone: € 19,40

There are also weekly Regio-tickets (valid in a region like Schwaz-Hall-Innsbruck) or Tirol tickets (valid allover Tirol). In general, all tickets are valid on all means of public transport (train,tram,bus).

Innsbruck to Munich train-what class?

How%26#39;s the 2nd class vs 1st class on the EC 188 that departs Innsbruck @ 10:36 AM? thanks

|||

EC 188 consists of italian coaches...

Example of 1st class:

railfaneurope.net/pix/…TI_Z_A_1.jpg

Example of 2nd class:

railfaneurope.net/pix/…060718-37.jpg

Both types have 6 seats per compartment (usually not all seats are taken, don%26#39;t worry). 1st class has carpet, 2nd class has plastic floor. Slightly more distance between the seats in 1st class. In Austria in 1st class: selection of free (german language) newspapers, sometimes a small toffee for free.

About 90% travel in 2nd class, especially on this short route there%26#39;s no need to spend the money in 1st.

Cost of 2nd class (all tickets are flexible) € 36,20

Cost of 1st class (also all flexible) € 58,00

the Krems-Melk Danube towns

Hello,

We two fit and active 60 year olds have 5/6 days in Vienna in early May. We don%26#39;t like being too organised but fear we will be overwhelmed culturally by so many museums, art galleries, palaces, gardens, music etc. We would love to take a day out to see something of this valley. So many of the towns sound enticing but after reading much in guide books and on this site we are unsure how much we can do in one day and which places we should see. The wine producing towns sound wonderful, but so too does Aggstein castle and the Benedictine abbey at Melk).

Also, as we won%26#39;t have a car, is it possible to get on and off the boat trips we have read about? Or should we use trains? We would prefer to see 1 or 2 (?3) places properly and at leisure rather than gazing at the scenery from a boat or train for hours. Walking is great and we love it - if that helps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

|||

You can make a nice day trip from Vienna and have a good chance to see some of the many sights in the area of the Danube wachau - melk area.

One of the best methods to do this -

take the combi train - boat danube tour-

www.ddsg-blue.danube.at

the train from Vienna westbahnhof to melk- tour the beautiful and historic Benedictine Melk Abbey.

I would suggest taking the boat down river to Dürnstein passing excelent scenery and villages of Spitz St. Michael, Weissenkirchen.

The boat dock in Dürnstein on the nice promenede along the river and is about in the middle of the historic place.

Just walk upp the steps from the boat dock and you are in the middle of this village- really just one street- beautiful old houses and buildings many 1500- 1600s- above the castle ruins where legend says King Richard of England held for ransom in the 12 th century- climb up there if you wish- fantastic views of the surroundings and danube - great chance for pictures.

several good places to eat in the town and sample varius wines of the region- a short walk away are many vineyards.

Loiben is a 1 kilometer walk away from Durnstein throgh the vineyards passing some nice heurigers ( wine taverns.

Then a short regional train from Dürnstein/Loiben to Krems with an easy transfer to the train krems- Vienna.

The town of krems also interesting but , I think time Melk- Dürnstein is better.

Aggstein is very nice ruin but on the opposite side of the Danube from most places- no train connection- infrequent bus service but the stop some distance and a steep walk up the mountain to find it - Dürnstein more convenient with with better surroundings.

Whatever you choose this makes for a most interesting and diverse day.

This can all be done in a full day excursion-

Trains back to Vienna run until later in the evening to let you spend the time you wish to see things.

www.ddsg-blue-danube.at

a beutiful Church and monastery in Dürnstein too.

|||

thank you for the excellent advice. I will follow the links and pursue this further.

restaurants in Kaprun

Hi there

We are planning a week%26#39;s skiing in Kaprun in March and are looking at b%26amp;b-only pension-style accommodation as opposed to half board hotel options. We have read lots of reviews describing Kaprun%26#39;s apres-ski as quiet which we%26#39;re not worried about but are wondering what the restaurant options are, in terms of variety and quality, for evening meals in the village.

Thanks

Al

|||

There%26#39;s plenty of variety and none that we wouldn%26#39;t return to. Hilbergers is very traditional and a bit special, but not too pricy. Kitsch %26amp; Bitter is smart and very good. The restaurant at the Baum Bar is good value, as is Zuchinnis. The latter is sort of tex-mex, but also does local dishes. There are several good pizza restaurants, including Casa Bella. Many of the hotels have restaurants that non-residents can use. We particularly like the Hotel Mitteregger.

|||

Hey Bells 59

Thanks for those tips, we%26#39;re there for a week so we%26#39;ll give them all a go!

Marriot Vienna Schoenbrunn

Hi there, does anyone know the best way to get to the Marriot Vienna Schoenbrunn from Vienna Airport? I am landing quite early so don%26#39;t want to be hanging around trying to figure it out!

Nearest:

Subway Station

U4 Schoenbrunn (0.1 miles W)

Train Station

Westbahnhof Wien (1.2 miles)

Thanks

|||

Presume you mean the Courtyard Schönbrunn.

From the airport take suburban train (S-Bahn) S8 to %26quot;Wien Mitte%26quot; station. Transfer there to underground line U4 (direction %26quot;Hütteldorf%26quot;) alighting at the 8th stop %26quot;Schönbrunn%26quot;. Total journey time about 45 minutes - cost 3.40. But see this recent thread about other ticket types:

Historic towns

We%26#39;re planing to visit Austria at the beginning of July and as we%26#39;ve already seen Innsbruck, Salzbug and Vienna we%26#39;re thinking about what is advertised on the Austrian Tourism website as the %26quot;Classic Tour%26quot;/ Historic towns Tour.

Has anybody done it?

We%26#39;re afraid it may be too crammed in for 12 days and are thinking about dividing into 2 tours - maybe leaving one part for next year.

We%26#39;re 2 60yr old couples and will be travelling by car from Italy.

Any suggestion is welcome!!

Thanks!

|||

Do you mean the towns mentioned on this website (http://www.khs.info/)?

What historical sites/towns do you actually refer to?

|||

Sorry I%26#39;m answering so late - I%26#39;ve been away for a week.

Yes I meant those!

Travelling from Salzburg to Innsbruck

I plan to travel from salzburg to innsbruck

Can I use bayern ticket from salzburg to Kufstein and Einfach ticket from kufstein to innbruck?

|||

It will take you a VERY long time to travel with local transport. In general, this is doable. You could also travel via Zell am See only with the Einfach-Raus-Ticket. Mind that it all takes longer and that regional trains are not as comfortable as long-distance trains as they are usually made for distances of not more than 1 hour.

|||

You did not state the number of travelers. Just be conscious of the fact that a minimum of 2 persons is required for the Einfach-Raus-Ticket. Moreover, you should not forget that two passes, like in this case, don%26#39;t have to be decsively cheaper than a regular ticket. Assuming 2 travelers, we can determine the costs for each option:

ERT+BayernTicket ~57€

Regular ticket ~60€

|||

We are the group of 3 persons.

It could save around 30 Euro but I am not sure if it is the good idea or not.

1) We have to change the train at Roseheim with only 6 minutes

2) It takes 1 hour longer than the direct train

Regional train leave at 19:18 and arrive innsbruck at 22:16

The IC leave at 20:30 and arrive innsbruck at 22:30.

We need to catch the euronight to florence from innsburk at 23:05.

Appreciate your suggestion

|||

One more thing. I have only 25 minutes at Linz from Cesky krumlov to catch the regional train by Einfach ticket. Shall I buy it before from internet or it had better to buy from machnie at Linz?

If I buy from internet, Can i just print the ticket out from my email?

I am not sure if it is difficult to use the ticket machine.

If I buy from the service counter, is there any special charge like bayern ticket (2 Euro charge)?

Thank you so much

|||

Well, a 30€ saving in conjunction with an increased travel time by 60 minutes is probably a good and acceptable deal. If trains arrive on time, six minutes are definitely enough. But I would not risk it and take one train earlier.

If you really have 25 minutes in Linz you can relax. The ticket purchase is quite easy as you can switch the language. The display features an own button for the Einfach-Raus-Ticket. You only have to select the number of travelers (in your case three) and finalise the purchase by pressing the YES, PURCHASE button. The vending machines accept all major credit cards.

If you buy it on the internet you need to print it at home. As far as I know there is no extra charge for purchase of the ERT at a staffed counter. But again, it can easily be bought from vending machines.

|||

I think you plan too much time for all.

The best connection Salzburg-Innsbruck-Florence is

OEC 762, dep. Salzburg at 21:06

Arr. Innsbruck 23:00

CNL 485 Dep. Innsbruck at 23:05 (on the opposite side of the same platform).

Mind that regular rail tickets in Austria are valid for 6 days (oneway, more than 100 km). Cost of 3 adults Linz-Salzburg-Innsbruck is € 111,70.

2x Einfach-Raus-Ticket € 56

1x Bayernticket € 28 (2 € more from the ticket window)

Total € 84.

So the difference between regular tickets that entitle you to travel on fast and more comfortable trains and save much time is only € 9,23 per person.

|||

Hi Robbi.

I just think that I will use ERT for the route

Linz to Hallstatt and Hallstatt to Salzburg.

Is it ok for this ticket type?

Heard that the ERT is not the whole day ticket. Is it valid only one time used? (However, we will use only once a day. Just wanna know the information)

Then We will spend one night in Salzburg.

From Salzburg to Innsbruck, I will consider the IC as well. I may catch the train at 20:30 from Salzburg to arrive Innbruck 22:30. I am not sure about the delay of the train

|||

The Einfach-Raus-Ticket is only valid on local trains (S-Bahn, RSB, R, ER, REX), not on D,IC,EC,ICE,OIC,OEC,railjet,EN.

More info on the Einfach-Raus-Ticket at:

oebb.at/pv/…index.jsp

Usually trains are not delayed and connections most of the time wait. If in your whole journey there is a delay of more than 60 minutes (or 120 minutes with night trains) you%26#39;ll get a refund of 20% and/or taxi ride or night in a hotel for a maximum of € 80 per person.

|||

I am always amazed about the rumors....

The ERT is a day pass whose validity starts either at 9am (weekdays) or is unlimited on weekends and public holidays.
