Day trips from Vienna

My husband and I are traveling to Vienna in late October. We have been to Vienna before and are looking to take a couple day trips outside the city. I was thinking about Melk and I know we can take a train there. Is this a good choice? Does anyone have any other suggestions? We can travel by train or by car. Thanks for any suggestions.

Many choices -

you can use the search box -

The day trip to Melk with the boat down the Danube is a great choice

The Abbey is a fully restored - still active today including a school- great views of the Danube.

They probably still pick grapes in this area - fun to try some of the resulting - Most or Sturm

other ideas

Schlosshof

www.schlosshof.at

Fine country castle of the Royals with nice gardens, small zoo and nice dining.

The roman ruins at Carnuntum

interseting museum - rebuilt villas -

Many do not realize the Danube was a frontier for the Roman Empire with many fortresses including here and also by Vienna.

Carnuntum became a good sized city-even a Roman Emperor from this town.

probably best visited by auto

easily combined with Schlosshof nearby

Stift Klosterneuburg

quick train ride from Vienna- 15 minutes

If you go to Stift Melk, and do the River Danube/Train deal, you could also stop in Krems (you can ask them at tourist info downtown how, or at the Bahnhof if your German is up to scratch). You can visit their Karrikaturmuseum and the Kunsthaus of Krems. Both usually have interesting exhibits on.

If you travel south of the city on the trains from Wien Meidling you can alight at three delightful towns that give easy access into the Vienna Woods: Mödling, Gumpoldskirchen and Baden. Baden is also serviced by the Badner Bahn tram which leaves just by the Opera House. From Mödling you could get a bus to Heiligenkreuz with its famous monastery (Stift) and the nearby village of Mayerling scene of the infamous tragedy which led to the death of Crown Prince Rudolf and his girlfriend Mary Vetsera. The scenery throughout the woods is beautiful and all the towns I mention have wine gardens to refresh yourself before the trip back to Vienna.
