from Vienna-Salzburg-Hallstatt OR Vienna-Hallstatt-Salzburg?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to travel to Vienna this summer... and while I am there, I am hoping to visit Salzburg and Hallstatt. I am thinking of two days for both of these places, but I am not sure if I should go to Salzburg and then Hallstatt or to Hallstatt and then Salzburg.

I will be coming back to Vienna after my trip. I suppose the answer would depend on what type of tourist attractions are at each places... like how much time I will need in both places.. and how long it takes to get to these places. I don%26#39;t mind traveling overnight..(not sure if there will be a train though).

If you could give me some suggestions that would be very appreciated! While you are at it, could you also tell me some attractions available in these places? At the moment, I am only aware that both of these places are just BEAUTIFUL :) Oh and of course, Salzburg has Sound of Music tour.

As you will return to Vienna, it does not matter in what sequence you visit Salzburg and Hallstatt. In the Salzkammergut I would additionally focus on St. Wolfgang (cute village by the lake with a famous cog railroad bringing you to a great lookout), Bad Ischl (the summer residence of the emperor) and Obertraun (Dachstein Mountain).

No overnight trips necessary/possible as Salzburg is only 2h40min apart from Vienna.

I would go first the Salzburg which is a straight train journey and still a sizable town, then to Halstatt by bus. Halstatt is much smaller so I would choose to make the change of location in 2 steps. Also you will be more familiar with Austria for the second journey, which may involve a change of bus.

Hallstatt can be reached/left behind without going through Salzburg. Trains from/to Hallstatt go to/originate from %26quot;Attnang-Puchheim%26quot; which is the interchange station for passengers to/from Vienna. %26quot;Attnang-Puchheim%26quot; is served by all InterCity trains between Salzburg and Vienna which depart in accordance with the arrival and departure times of regional trains.
