holiday apartment in Vienna

Hi

I will be in Vienna 15 -23 May and would like to stay in a self-catering apartment in the middle of the city at below 100 euro per day. any recommendation is much appreciated.

Is it just for you, or do you travel with a party?

I%26#39;ve stayed at Vivianne Oesterreicher%26#39;s one-bedroom apartment in the Bauernmakrt which is very close to Stephansdom. The apartment is lovely, and good value compared with hotel rooms in that area:

A budget apartment I%26#39;ve not tried but have considered, since the location is great, is an apartment offered by Pension Lerner. They have a Pension on the Wipplingerstrasse but also have a couple of apartments on the Schulerstrasse, again very close to Stephansdom

I%26#39;ve also stayed in these apartments which are very nice though they may be more than you wanted to pay, depending how much space you need. They%26#39;re on the Schwedenplatz, in easy walking distance to the airport busstop at Morzinplatz, and close by the main sights, with good transport links all round the city including the U4 ubahn line to Schoenbrunn. Apartment 6 (one bedroom) is very nice and roomy; Apartment 5 is also well equipped though probably only suitable for one person

Hope that gives you something to consider!

Glad you were able to find something, anyway - and the Schwedenplatz apartments are very pleasant, so you should be comfortable there. Good for the opera too since you can just cross the platz and hop on the tram (now nr. 2 going clockwise round the Ring - they%26#39;ve split the Ring trams so 1 goes to the Prater Allee) and be whisked straight to the Oper!

I checked the oeusterricher (SP!) apartment and it looks very nice. I was a little daunted that they want us to send cash. Is this the usual way? What protection would we have? Thanks

There is a strange resistance to the acceptance of cards in Austria and Vienna. I%26#39;m not sure why that is as it must lose some establishments custom from visitors who are used to paying by card. I recently returned from India and never once found a hotel or restaurant where we couldn%26#39;t pay by card.

However, no matter how strange it may seem to some of us, that%26#39;s the way it is and if you want to book many apartments or smaller hotels you have to accept their payment methods. It%26#39;s probably worth checking reviews of the establishment to see if anyone%26#39;s had a problem paying by transfer and if all seems well grit your teeth and make the payment. I suspect there would have been some feedback by now if they were in any way bogus.

The cold north of where do you come from?

La Belle Province

A lovely area - my brother-in-law lives in Montreal.

Unlike hotels, many of the Austrian holiday apartments I%26#39;ve encountered are rented by private owners who don%26#39;t have facilities to accept credit-card payments, so they ask for deposits paid via bank transfer and the rest in cash on arrival. I%26#39;m always a bit nervous about that too but so far I%26#39;ve had no problems with bookings I%26#39;ve made. In Vienna I%26#39;ve stayed in both the Oesterreicher apartment and the Vienna City Rental flats on Franz Josefskai, and the payments for both places went through without a hitch. I felt more comfortable about both of these places because neither asked for a key deposit or a damage deposit, which can sometimes be 200+ euros, to be returned on departure - that always seems a rather daunting arrangement to me (what if you need to leave early, or they decide you have made 200 eur worth of damage?)

I%26#39;d be very happy to return at the Oesterreicher apartments and the VCR on Franzjosefskai - the owners of both places were extremely friendly and helpful. And the photos on the websites are very fair representations of both flats - they both really do look like the photos (so the Oesterreichers flat is super-swish, especially the bathroom!) As I mentioned, the Oesterreicher flat has free wifi too. I thought it was a real bargain for the space and facilities in such a central, convenient location.

Does free wifi mean you need a laptop or that they have a computer?

|||

Yes, you need to bring your own laptop to access the WIFI. I%26#39;ve never stayed anywhere with a computer supplied - except good old Pension Pertschy which provides a free computer terminal with internet access in the lobby (they provide free wifi too if you BYO laptop).

You don%26#39;t say if you%26#39;re considering hotels as well as flats but if so, Pertschy is a good choice - within spitting distance of the Hofburg so right in the centre, and cheaper than anything else in the immediate area (including Pension Nossek which has mysteriously grown more expensive of late). As well as the lobby PC for guests, the rooms have good facilities including a minibar which is useful in summer and unusually comfortable beds. See www.pertschy.com
