I am keen photographer and try to find a nice scenic view near Vienna (around 1 hour by public transport) e.g. overlooking the Donau valley or river and a small city.
Are there are something like this?
I will travel in March, so river cruise is not the option.
The Wachau is looks quite attractive but I got only pne day for such research, and all advise are to stay in the area, as trasportation is quite rare.
Probably I get a wrong feeleing about it?

The Wachau is very scenic and beautiful, especially Dürnstein - you can walk up to the ruins and get a lovely view down to the Danube and vineyards from the same, but it would take you abot 1,5 hours by train from Vienna, with aone change on route.
You could catch the regional train at Wien Floridsdorf, change at Krems and get off at Dürnstein-Oberloiben, there are semi-regular services during the day. For schedules try the ÖBB website www.oebb.at .
To the east of Vienna, Hainburg/Donau might be a good option - the Braunsberg gives out to a view onto the National Park Donau-Auen, the small town of Hainburg and Bratislava. The Schnellbahn S7 (direction Wolfsthal) goes to Hainburg, you will probably have to walk from there, or perhaps you could take a taxi.
In Vienna, people usually go up to the Kahlenberg or Leopoldsberg by bus from Heiligenstadt underground station, but opinions on the view differ there. Have a look around www.kahlenberg.info (%26quot;Ansichten + Aussichten%26quot; will take you to an mage gallery).

Kahlenberg is a great option (on a clear day that is) and quite easy to get to by public transit. You could take the bus up and hike down through the vineyards to Grinzing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grinzing

The problem with Kahlenberg is that the view of Vienna and the Danube valley is very wide so it doesn%26#39;t lend itself to great photography. You need quite a long zoom to get recogniseable images of the landmarks.
I was up there twice in August, once on a dull day when my photos were - dull!! And once on a sunny day when my photos suffered from heat haze. I did use my SLR and tripod to shoot a series of telephoto shots to stitch into a panorama, but even then the results were only OK There are many more scenic views to photograph.
