Hi all
I%26#39;m going to Vienna next week end for a short holiday stay. It%26#39;s my first time to Austria, and I%26#39;m totally unaware about the austrian cuisine. Could you tell me something about the typical austrian food and some restaurants in Vienna where I can eat good austrian food without to spend too much money? I%26#39;m staying in geblergasse area. thanks

Look at the Pürstner website-
it will offer a menu of austrian specialties with a translation that will assist you.
www.puerstner.com
this place moderate priced and ample portions city center.
Of course in Vienna famous schnitzel
the most famous place for this for tourits Figlmüller
www.figlmueller.at
But most restaurants feature this on their menu.
Most of the following offer menus on website- could talk forever about the food but best to have a look and return with questions
a good food and beer place
Siebensternbrau
www.7stern.at
Hopferl on Naglergasse
www.bierhof.at
Schweizerhaus- famous for Stelze- (pork knuckle) in the Prater
www.schweizerhaus.at

I fully support vertical´s suggestions of Siebensternbräu (you might wish to take a short walk through the Biedermeier streets of the Spittelberg before or after dinner, it´s just in that area) and Schweizerhaus (have one or two... or more... of their Kartoffelpuffer!), they are both great places.
Directly in the city centre, I would also recommend Zum Bettelstudent www.bettelstudent.at . Sadly, their new website still is not available in English but I can confirm that they have menus in English available and the staff speaks English, too. Portions are very generous and the prices fair (the name %26quot;Bettelstudent%26quot; translates as Begging Student, roughly). They do great breads, ribs, salads, soups, meat dishes etc. It is located in Johannesgasse, bordering Hegelgasse, just 3 minutes from Haus der Musik or Schwarzenberplatz tram station.
On the whole, traditional Austrian food is very rich and wholesome - nothing really for those who intend to look after their waists. Vienna is said to be the only captial in the world with a cuisine named after it - Viennese Cuisine (Wiener Küche) and it is a wonderful mix of influences from various countries/places of the former K%26amp;K Empire.

It is a bit off the beaten path, but I always enjoy the non touristy Cafe Piccollo, at Gredlerstraße 10. It is just across the Donau from Schwedenplatz. Very reasonable and authentic Austrian cuisine. You can get a Schnitzel and a couple of beers for about 10 Euro!

Great and useful suggests, thanks all
I checked out at some of the web sites you wrote and the dishes looks generous and yummi. Great locations and typical, warm and good looking environments too. Fourtenately I speak some german so I shouldn%26#39;t be in great difficulty to understand the menus whenever not in english. thanks

A favorite local Austrian restuarant of mine for over 20 years is Spatzennest --- in the 7th District, not far from the %26quot;Ring%26quot;.

This is real locals%26#39; restaurant serving true Austrian specialties at a moderate price in a true Vienna atmosphere.

Your link did not work for me, please check it.

I tried the link yestarday (I%26#39;m always looking for new places to eat) and it worked, but I agree that today it%26#39;s down. It must be a problem with the host server or it%26#39;s being maintained.

If you go up to Grinzing there are plenty of Heurige (some more tourist-trappy than others) that sell hearty Austrian food - plenty of meat, etc, to accompany your flagon of wine.

I just %26quot;copied and pasted%26quot; the link for the Spatzennest, and it worked fine.

As I said, I%26#39;ve been eating here every year, a couple times each year, for over 20 years. It%26#39;s really great.
In fact, when I was last studying in Vienna in 1987, one of my professors noticed that I like good food, etc., and after class one day she told me about Spatzennest. She was sure I would like it, and she was soooooooo correct.
