Carnuntum By Train

We%26#39;ve been looking at previous posts regarding a possible visit to Carnuntum during our May Vienna trip. We will not have a car, but noted that we can train to Carnuntum. We have seen that many feel a car is a better way to go as it makes it easier to visit the spread out archeological site. Is it worthwhile to see the sites by foot, or even possible? Any advice is appreciated.

I would not rate this attraction particularly %26#39;breathtaking%26#39; or a %26#39;must-see%26#39;, but it is definitely interesting. If you only visit the sites around Pettronell-Carnuntum, then a car is not necessary at all. If you also wanna see the theater, which is East of Petronell-Carnuntum, you have to walk approximately 2000m. You could proceed to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg with its remarkable church and take a train back to Vienna from there.

Trains depart every hour from railway stations between Rennweg and Floridsdorf.

For those with any interest in history , I think Carnuntum makes for a great visit.

Many do not realize that the Danube was a frontier for the Roman Empire and many forts ,later leading to towns were erected. Forts included one at present day Vienna.

For some years some excavation work has uncovered some of this town. Most remains to be excavated , but many interesting things there .

Good descriptions are found on the following site - especially good is the recreations based on excavations -the villa and other buildings.

www.carnuntum.co.at

The museum is small but still good.

The best way to access is by car - but without one still an easy way by train but a good walk- weekend is better.

On weekends , a shuttle bus connects the train station to the various sights. This really aids your visit.

If you consider renting a auto for a day -

not far away - just on the other side of the Danube is Schlosshof-a famous country retreat of the Hapsburgs- now fully restored with fine gardens and nice restaurants- a small zoo too.

www.schlosshof.at

Combined - these 2 offerings make for a great and interesting day- some nice restaurants along the Danube too.

Thanks for the great advice. Maybe we will look into renting a car after all - at least one of us is a history buff and it seems it may be worthwhile. One more question - looking at the website for Schlosshof, which looks fabulous, we noticed that there are a number of other castles in the vicinity. The map shows a Orth Castle, Eckartsau and a Neiderwieden Castle nearby. Are all of these open to visitors? I can foresee a glorious day visiting castles and ruins!!

Orth is open for tours - www.orth.at

in a nice small town by same name - do not cionfuse this with Schloss Orth on the Lake bnot too far from Salzburg - this one more famous

this not far from Schlosshof but mmore interesting to me is

Eckartsau-- open for tours

http://eckartsau.museum.com

Much trivia and history asociated with this Castle- fine surroundings

and Niederwieden - open I think Thusday - Sunday - not far from Schlosshof

To do these a auto is needed - I would think Carnuntum, Schlosshof and 1 of the above may make a full day.

One suggestion- if you wish to rent a auto- to avoid traffic confusion- you could always rent and return to the airport - it is in the direction of Carnuntum ( probably 30 minutes maximum drive )and the above - airport easy to access via public transport.

This makes for a great day trip in my opinion-
