Werfen Ice Caves

Hi,

Can I check what%26#39;s the temp like in the caves? How thick clothing do I have to bring? Will long sleeves top plus a cardigan suffice?

As I%26#39;m backpacking, was thinking if any coat/jacket will be on rental over at Werfen Ice caves so that I need not have to bring heavy clothing.

I%26#39;m will be going in Mid May.

This is a strange question to me as most would assume that the name Ice Cave would indicate very cold temperatures.

Normally temperstures are at or near freezing. 32grad f or 0 grad Celsius. I do not believe a shirt and cardigan are at all good enough. You neeed warm winter type clothing and also good heavy shoes.

You also must realize that this entire trip takes several hours, so this is not just a short trip.

If you ask whether clothing is available to rent , not to my knowledge. Visitors should come prepared.

Hi there,

We visited the cave last May and the temperature inside the cave was around 0 degrees.

On the steep climb up to the cave we experienced snow flurries so you need to be prepared clothing wise.

I think I just put on a couple of warm layers and then my usual rain jacket plus hat and gloves.The tour lasted about 1 hr 30 mins and of course you must allow time to climb up there.

Hi speaking of the caves, I have another question. The website says there is a 134m climb to the caves. Can anyone tell me how steep or difficult this climb is, because my mother is 54 years old and tends to get arthritic pains in her knees from excessive difficult walking. Would it be suitable for her?

They offer a caution for the climb and visit - the walk to the caves 20 + minutes and steep - then he extensive tour- this is not for everyone.

You know the limitations of your family - if any doubts - do not do this - it is not an easy trip.
