Anyone stayed at the Hotel Alpenkrone in Filzmoos. Thinking of going 23 Feb for a week - is this resort too low at that time of year? Advice please ....

Hi Hartrit,
I%26#39;ve certainly met people who enjoyed the Alpenkrone but is it quite a walk from the village, uphill so is not very convenient. They used to run guests up and down in a minibus but based on your other posts about covenience of skiing and looking for some night life in the village, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it. As I already mentioned, I have stayed in the Unterhof several times and it%26#39;s a great hotel (see reviews), although 4* (vs 3* in Alpenkrone). It%26#39;s very close to the 4 man chair lift, food is superb and it has a lovely pool area (worth spending a little more for IMO) I also stayed once in the Hanneshof but didn%26#39;t like it as much. Others have reported Villa Rieder as being good for 3* and I also have eaten in the Weinpress where the food is good.
Regarding height, Filzmoos tends to get better snow than alot of places round about (currently has almost 1m at village level) so I believe it should be fine in February. The pistes most at risk as it thaws are the ones down to Neuberg (the next village). The area above the 4 man chair and the Rossbrand area on the other side will be fine. Although Filzmoos itself is small, with only 30km of skiing, the lift pass covers a big area and you can have a day or two out to check out Flachau (15 mins) or one of the other resorts in the Amade area if that takes your fancy.
From UK, Inghams is the only operator for Filzmoos but is is very easy to book a hotel on-line via the village website or direct with the hotel and ask the hotel to arrange pick up (or book a coach transfer). Flights tend to be a bit less mid week, the only thing to consider is that ski school starts Sat/Sun so this will limit you if you plan to join a class.

Thank you so much for your very informative message. Unfortunately I emailed the Unterhof and they are full at that time. Think it will be best if we go on Sat 23rd as most places seem to be Sat to Sat. Yes, the Hotel Alpenkrone is through Inghams and not ideally situated as you say. Will carry on trawling the net ........

Just trying to do my sums .....
Do you have any idea how much a ski pass is, plus hire of skis and boots?
Also - where did you stay?
Everywhere is pretty booked up.

I only stayed in Filzmoos once, but not for skiing (as the resort is very small, not many lifts), but for having dinner at the restaurant of Austria´s best cooks, Johanna Maier, in the restaurant Hubertus. They also have a nice hotel:

There is a quite new B%26amp;B right at the bottom of the Grossberg piste (opposite the Unterhof) which may be worth a look. It%26#39;s run by a british family and gets a good right up on TA. Certainly great location. Only B%26amp;B but there are plenty of eating options in the village. Their site also says they will do airport runs (but no price).
