Inexpensive food near Hotel Johann Strauss

Hello,

I%26#39;ve finally decided on the Hotel Johann Strauss (on Favoritenstrasse, near Taubstummengasse) for our April visit. I%26#39;m trying to get a list of inexpensive places to eat near the hotel (within 15-20 minutes walking?) I know the Naschmarkt is quite close but it closes at 18:00 (I think) so I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s good for supper--any ideas? We like sausage, felafel, Indian, kebap etc.

Thanks!

What about Austrian food?

|||

Isn%26#39;t sausage Austrian food? Yes, we%26#39;ll eat Austrian food but in my experience ethnic food is often less expensive and since the Euro costs me about C$1.65 right now (and it seems to be getting worse every day) we are trying to keep costs down. We generally eat at Museum restaurants for lunch and I%26#39;m just trying to research some casual inexpensive places for dinner.

|||

Eating lunch at museum restaurants won%26#39;t be a good way of keeping your costs under control. Lunch is the main meal of the day for many Viennese and a lot of restaurants and %26#39;pubs%26#39; (including ethnic ones) provide a special two course luncheon for a few euros. Choice may be limited at each establishment, but there%26#39;s plenty of choice between establishments!

|||

I know that eating lunch at museums isn%26#39;t the cheapest thing to do but we%26#39;re serious museum goers and are almost always at a museum for lunch--that%26#39;s why we eat more cheaply (and casually) at supper--

Wiedenbräu is not far off from your hotel - their prices are ok in my books and the food is good. The address is Waaggasse 5, 1040 Vienna, just off Wiedner Hauptstrasse on the map.

%26quot;Bräu%26quot; stands for brewery, so you can expect Austrian/German food and their own, homemade beer.

Inexpensive Indian in the 4th district is tricky. The best are Demi Tass, but that one is a bit farer off and pricey, and the famous and popular Indian Pavilion on Naschmarkt - which is tiny and closes at 18:30.

The Centimeter chain (it is Centimeter V) also has a branch in Schleifmühlgasse (where you will also find an Irish pub and Bobby´s, an English supermarket. Anglophile heaven ;)), which also comes with an easy walking distance. Their website is rather awful, but click on %26quot;Food %26amp; Beverage%26quot; for an English menu www.centimeter.at

Amasi is an oriental restaurant in Margaretenstrasse 34 and I think they do an all-you-can-eat buffet during lunch time on weekdays at EUR 8,50 or something. Dinner is more expensive.

Hey! We live in the 4th district and there a lots of options for good food. But, I thought you could gauge what is expensive for you by using this link:

just push into the area along Favoritenstrasse and more restaurants will appear. Best sushi in area = Bok on Favoritenstrasse just up the hill from your hotel. Great Mexican at the top of Favoritenstrasse = Jalisco just beyond Karoliniengasse (8-10 min walk from your hotel). British/Irish section just down around the corner from where you are staying, concierge should know. Untried Kebab stand on Taubstumengasse and some bakeries on Argentinierstrasse: one to the left and one to the right of intersection of Taubstumentgasse and Argentinierstrasse. There is a Hofer grocery store on Waaggasse where you can buy all kinds of things cheaper than the other grocery stores (scroll left on ta map link I included).

Heyerette, dayglider--thanks for the info!

It is a bit off the beaten path, but I always enjoy the non touristy Cafe Piccollo, at Gredlerstraße 10. It is just across the Donau from Schwedenplatz. Very reasonable and authentic Austrian cuisine. You can get a Schnitzel and a couple of beers for about 10 Euro!
