Landhaus Marlies/Schmittenhof Restaurant - any good?

We are thinking of booking into the Lanhdaus Marlies catered chalet - dinner is served at the Schmittenhof restaurant which we are told is 4 star and owned byu the Landhaus Martha owners. The TA reveiwers give very mixed reviews on the food. Any experience of the Scmittenhof? No TA reviews yet.

We may have 1 non skier - is the ski bus reliable for them to get into the village easily?

Any suggestions for a family group who%26#39;ve never been to Zell before (adults) of mixed skiing abililty if we go the hotel route?

I don%26#39;t know anything about this hotel, except where it is. About 3 quarters way from Zell town centre to Schmittenhohe cable car. The ski bus runs past the hotel, the only problem is that in the mornings it is pretty full, so you may have to wait to be able to get on. The walk to the centre would be about 20 minutes down the hill, the bigger problem is getting back up the hill. The buses run only during the day, so in the evening you would need to take a taxi (unless you want to walk). the buses are free with ski passes, not sure whether they are available to non skiers without paying.

As far as the ski mix you are worried about, you can get down the hill to the centre from Schmittenhohe on a blue run, if you wish, or a mixture of red or black runs....depends on individual abilities. There is something for everyone.

I have visited Zell many times over the last 10 years, and enjoyed every minute.

Thanks for your feedback, it%26#39;s really helpful. If anyone has stayed there please put some feedback on TA. Thank you.

I stayed at Der Schmittenhof over Christmas. I certainly do not and could not recommend it. I had one of the worst Christmases I can remember purely because of these two hotels. I have never come across such rude staff before. Generally they were awful. %26#39;The internationals borne of no country%26#39;, so they can get away all the smiling tricks in the guest abuse book. I thought this kind of behaviour had stopped in the 20th Century.

They also could be downright rude to your face, whilst the smiling tricks book was more common (maybe making you realise some time afterwards it was totally unnacceptable). For downright rude, I was told I could move into a room in the first hotel I%26#39;d booked, after having been denied it for days against my will and my complaints. As was typical not even transferring after days to the room I%26#39;d actually booked would go smoothly.

I went to breakfast that morning in Landhotel Martha, poured my coffee, and was told I had to that instant to the reception for something important. I said %26#39;I%26#39;ve poured my coffee%26#39; and asked can I go after I%26#39;ve had some?. I was told to my surprise, very unpleasantly, that, no - I couldn%26#39;t - that was not possible I had to go to reception at once.

Martha is so far from a four star hotel. So, so so far.

Landhotel Marlies is right next to Landhotel Martha. Because Der Schmittenhof gave my room away and transferred me to %26#39;Martha%26#39;, I stayed at %26#39;Martha%26#39; for the first few nights, but not giving up complaining that this just was not acceptable got me transferred to the room I had booked after a few days. Although Schmittenhof is not far from Die Martha, it took me nearly 15 minutes walking fast uphill to get to where I had my dinner. That was the only thing they could suggest in the first few nights, as Martha%26#39;s sauna was closed all day Saturday and only open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. other days. The timing meant I had to eat dinner in Schmittenhof. I arrived absolutely sweating, though wearing only an open fleece jacket, just about making it for dinner, nearly having slipped on my back a number of times.

Dinner took very nearly an hour and a half to be served at Der Schmittenhof, for one person with no choice of menu (I am vegetarian). People who had finished their started also had not got their dessert that night when I left. And it was too late to make Der Schmittenhof%26#39;s wellness which closed at 9, when I was finishing dinner.

The only plus about this awful place, Der Schmittenhof, is that the food is excellent. Though it is the slowest service I have ever come across, if quite formal and reasonably often pleasant from apparently well trained waiting staff.

I was going to leave within the first few days and find some room - any room - anywhere in or near Zell. I really wish I had. Awful place, awful staff. Avoid both the Landhotel Martha and Der Schmittenhof. The staff told me the couple they had double booked my booked room to had cancelled, though you never know whether to believe these people or not. They said things when I was checking out which were very untrue, and the opposite of what earlier receptionists had told me.

I do not know anything about Landhotel Marlies, between %26#39;Martha%26#39; and %26#39;Schmittenhof%26#39;. I know one person whom I dealt with, Caroline, who described herself as the area manager for Landhotels, was very unpleasant indeed. If it%26#39;s Der Schmittenhof for the food only, I can%26#39;t not recommend it, as the food was really lovely, all the time. The buffet breakfasts included - they were pretty great, I really enjoyed them.

There is a really great chef at Der Schmittenhof and very good kitchen staff - the presentation was very good. Courses are small, haute cuisine style, though there are 4 courses for dinner, so that%26#39;s O.K. The only thing is that there must be 5 or so kitchen staff short because the service was so long for all meals. So if you can put up with very relaxed timing for dinners, it%26#39;s fine. If like me, you were skiing until just before 5 p.m., and need the wellness room before it closes, you might be frustrated.

Sorry, it%26#39;s not clear at the start of my message, above, the 2 hotels I mean are Der Schmitenhof and Landhotel Martha.

I don%26#39;t know about Landhaus Marlies itself, as I%26#39;ve said further into the note. I remember wondering if I should be wishing I had chosen to stay there.

I don%26#39;t know if Landhaus = Landhotels in Austria. There is a further hotel further down the hill on Schmittenstrasse called Landhotel something. It may be just an independent place called that, or part of the large Austrian Landhotels chain.

I know that Schmittenhof and Martha are part of this chain though they are also locally owned - the family from Zell has owned Martha for years and has recently opened Der Schmittenhof.
