3 of us are planning a week to Vienna in July, but thought we would start our trip flying into Zurich or Munich then travel by train to Vienna. Has anybody any thoughts on which city to fly into. Then which towns to stop in on the way to Vienna,

A map would clearly show you that Munich is much closer to Vienna than Zurich. From both cities you could book a connecting flight to Vienna on FlyNiki Airline which offer relatively cheap oneway flights.

I would definitely stop in Salzburg as there is so much to see and do.
