My husband and I are staying at the Alpenland Sporthotel in Maria Alm August 31st through Sept 7th. We are renting a car and would love to take a couple of day road trips. What are some %26quot;must see%26#39;s%26quot; that are within a 3 hour radius. We love driving and seeing sights along the way.
Also, what some activities available right in Maria Alm.
Any tips about anything we should know before going?

Use the search function here - maria Alm - type in %26quot; day trips%26quot;-
many discussions on this subject
town website will have information too.
As this is one of just a few time share places - they receive numerous foreign guests trading their time.- The hotel should have extensive information for you also.

Places to go
1)Salzburg - must see but very busy city to park. Birthplace of Mozart and setting for the Sound of Music.
2) Zell am See - pretty town on a lake
3) Hallstatt - Historical town and centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
4)Mondsee/Wolfgangsee/St Gilgen/St Wolfgang - Take a boat across the Wolfgangsee.
5)Grossglocknerstrasse/Heiligenblut - fantastic scenery from this toll road across the Alps.
6)Berchetsgarten- The Eagles Nest - Hitlers summer retreat.
7) Staunsee Reservoirs
8) Krimml Waterfalls
Hope that gives you some ideas!

Can you please advise us. WE are planning to stay there in May for a week -- is it a good idea? Any tips or suggestions for us?

May should be fine. If you have a car, all the places mentioned by the previous poster are OK, except that Mondsee, Wolfgangsee, etc. are a long day of driving. The town with the Eagle%26#39;s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is called Berchtesgaden. You can drive up (or take a bus from the RR station) as far as the Obersalzberg; then you have to transfer to a bus and an elevator. If the crowds are bad, a place with almost the same great views is the Jenner. You can catch the gondola lift from near the Koenigsee.
I would addto the list the Saalbach-Hinterklemm valey.
Keep in mind that if you get on the Austrian autobahns anywhere (such as when going to Hallstadt) you will need to get beforehand a Vignette for your car. Without it, you run the risk of getting a stiff %26quot;ticket%26quot; fine.
I trongly recommend that you get a car. Without it, you are somewhat limited as to where you can go. Maria Alm is not on a main train route. The nearest train station is in Saalfelden. From there you can go to Zell am See,Salzburg. Berchtesgaden is out of the way, as is Hallstatt. For the Grossglockner you probably can get a bus tour out of Saalfelden or even Maria Alm
