I notice that a lot of hotels are not available in October. Is something going on in Vienna?
Thanks

there are several smaller traid fairs in Vienna and some medical congresses but both medical congresses will end on 03rd Oct

Use the hotel locator onthe Vienna tourist web site. this is a quick and easy way to find hotels with availibility - I checked various dates in October and found many available.
www.wien.info
click to hotels - enter dates and criteria
With schools returning to session in September - some tourism slows- but many cutural venues begin seasons in September and by October all are busy - still you should be able to find something - perhaps especially this year with tourism set to probably decrease a little dur to economic reasons.

There is always something going on in Vienna! I hope you enjoy your trip!
My favorite event in October is the Lange Nacht der Museen (the long night of the museums)! A one day event that happened last year on October 4th. One ticket is 13Euros which gives you access to 90+ museums between 6pm-2am and free public transportation on designated bus lines. Here is a link (will probably be updated for 2009 by the time you visit):

Here is an event calendar (in deutsch, but fairly navigable (remember EU dates are date/month/year):

Here is a guide an event calendar of the work spaces around the city (art, music +) in German, but not too difficult to cipher (you will probably want to check it out as october nears):
