I will be in vienna from the 10th to the 15th of sept. I would like to take a day trip to stinatz, a small town 60 miles or so soulth of vienna to research my grandfather%26#39;s birthplace (surname kirisits). Can I get public transportation here or is it better to rent a car and drive there?

Almost all places in Austria can be reached by public transportation. Some quite often and fast, others rather slow in conjunction with transfers.
Check the website of Austrian Railways (ÖBB) including Regional Bus Lines:

Perhaps a car is better as the area you will visit is very rural.

In my opinion , it is much better to rent a car for this day.
The town of Stinatz is south of Oberwart and north of Stegersbach. It is easily reached by taking the A-2 autobahn south from Vienna.
Stinatz ( or Stinjaki ) is on a small road in an area of other small villages. Not too far from the Hungarian border.
Public transport not well suited for a visit.
Having the car gives you freedom to explore the area a little.Perhaps even look for family name. You can stop at the nearest post or tabak - they know everything.
I assume you look for a grave or records of your family.
A small Church in town, shown on the map, the graveyard should be there.
Many Churches in this area and others too small for a resident Priest so it may not be open if you look for Birth and Death records.
Graveyards are normally always open.
But a caution, graves are often rented for a fixed period. Without payment over time it can be removed.
I hope this is not happening in your instance.
But still it makes a nice day and just to see the area of your family is a very good thing.

Do you still have family there?
I know that f. e. there are several medical doctors in that area with the surname Kirisits.

Thank you for the usefull information. I will rent a car and drive from vienna during my stay in austria. All I have been able to find out about my grandfather Yosef Kirisits is that he arrived in america on ellis island on 1910, then to buffalo n.y. when he was 32 years old. The name kirisits is common and the ellis island passenger lists have about 25 names from this area of austria

alkirisits - I am wondering how/if your trip to Stinatz went? I am also from the Buffalo area (Angola) and my grandfather is from Stinatz, came here in 1922 aboard the ship the Antwerp direct to Ellis Island. His name was John (Johan) Kirisits. He died before I was born - so I do not know much about the family. I can be reached at SMUrbaniak@ymail.com
