One night in Salzburg

Hello

I will be in Salzburg for one night while enroute to Vienna and I will have about 22 hrs or less before I take the train to Vienna in the late afternoon.

I would like advice on :-

1. where to stay preferably near the train station that goes to Vienna).

2. things to do in Salzburg (the must sees, restaurants, etc) as I would really like to make the most of my time there.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Jes

I just did the same thing--a little detour for a day in Salzburg before Vienna. It is a very compact city but I wouldn%26#39;t stay near the train station--stay in old town--with the wonderful little alleyways with neat shops. I stayed at a great little hotel called ALTSTADT WEISSE TAUBE or WEISSE TAUBE...they use both names since ALTSTADT means old town. Anyway, the great thing I did was I bought the 24 hour Salzburg card. This card gets you on all the busses and into all the museums. So, I went to Mozart%26#39;s birthhouse and then his regular house where he grew up, I took the tram up to the fortress plus entrance to the fortress, I went to the modern art museum plus they have a skydeck that was free for the card holders (very cool skydeck with amazing views over Salzburg), plus the Salzburg museum, and the Residenze which was the best place of all--it was the palace where all the VIP%26#39;s lived throughout Salzburg history. So I loved the city and did alot with that card. Also, there is a beautiful, modern %26quot;Demel%26quot; in Salzburg near this hotel. The %26quot;Demel%26#39; in Vienna is old and antique and this one is different. Have a good time!

All of the above, including and especially the Catherdral. I spent a day there a few years ago and just walked. Found a beautiful little cemetary. It%26#39;s a lovely place, safe to walk and explore, fantastic little alleys and shops. If you have time and a vehicle check out a salt mine tour or do a sound of music tour.

Can%26#39;t help with a place to stay - last time I was there I stayed in a youth hostel.

Hello, I agree about not staying near the train station. It%26#39;s not a good part of town. Because Salzburg is so small you can be at the train station within ten minutes from most parts of the city. The poster above recommended the hotel Weisse Taube. It%26#39;s in a great location just below the fortress and right in the heart of the old town. I haven%26#39;t stayed there but it always gets good reviews here on TripAdvisor.

Make sure you visit the fortress. The funicular railway takes just 30 seconds to reach the top and there is lots to see up there. St Peter%26#39;s cemetery is very interesting to see too. The entrance to it is a stone%26#39;s throw from the fortress and if you walk all the way through the cemetery you can then pop into Stiftskeller St Peter courtyard and have a drink. This is the oldest restaurant in Europe. The courtyard is hewn into the rock of the Monchsberg. I agree that the cathedral and the residenz building are great to see. The museum of modern art can be approached via the Monchsberg lift. Even if you don%26#39;t want to visit the museum the best views of the city can be found outside its doors and the Monchsberg is a lovely hill to take a walk on.

If you%26#39;re going to see the traditional sights like the Mozart houses, fortress, use the Monchsberg lift, etc these are all included on the Salzburg card so as the above poster says it would be a good idea to buy it.

There are lots of wonderful restaurants in Salzburg. The Stieglkeller, just a few steps along from the entrance to the funicular station, has wonderful views over the city.
