My son will be spending the 2009 school year at the University in Linz. Years (and years and years) ago when I traveled as a student we got Eurail Passes that were very cheap and we could spend the summer staying in hostels and meeting other students. Is there an equivalent these days that would last the whole year? Or should he just buy passes on those days/weekends he plans to travel? I know that he wants to see as many other countries as possible while he is there and I am wondering if it makes sense for me to buy anything like that in advance? Thanks for any advice about anything about this or anything about students abroad.

Eurail Passes still exist but %26quot;cheap%26quot; is not the description that would apply to them. And certainly not for a whole year.

Forget %26quot;passes%26quot; - your son can just buy tickets as he ges. For some destinations (especially to France, Italy etc.)booking in advance can save significant money; for other directions it does not matter when to buy it.

If your son is under 26 he can purchsae a youth VorteilScard for 19,90 euro.
This permits discounts of up to 50 % for rail tickets within Austria , 25 % outside the austrianborder.
Look for more info on the austrian rail website
